Credit card compromised...

Got four alert texts from my credit card company as I was driving home, looks like I made 4 separate $400 transactions at toms.com.  WTF.  If I stole someone's credit card, I would not go shit crazy and charge up a storm at a internet shoe retailer.  So easy to catch.  I would lay low, maybe run some small charges on it like some tacos or something and see if the owner reacts.  Bleed them slowy as opposed to the 'homerun'.  Most people don't look at their cc statements, small charges will squeeze by, $1200 charged in the same day around the same time in 4 separate accounts can wake the dead.  Dumbass.

Which brand card was it?

Since we moved to using Amex primarily, we haven't had any fraud on it yet (knocks on qwerchete).

Our Mastercard, on the other hand, had to be replaced at least twice a year.

Discover, and it was me who called them.  Guess they thought multiple $400 charges placed on my card within minutes is normal.  The text alerts were the ones setup by me a long time ago.  I remember when my Amex got compromised, they were quick, called me personally, texted, and emailed.

Last two charges on my Discover were at Home Depot a few months ago, and prior to that it was Amazon.  Wonder who had the security leak or maybe I had malware on my computer?

I think the last time my Mastercard got frauded, I used it at a food truck.. now I only pay cash when getting my 99%er food.

Let me teach you the wisdom from my own trial and error. I had my first credit card in 1979 and my card info was stolen over 40 times. I use a different card for meal, on line purchase, convenient store/gas, retail store purchase and grocery store.

The only card that was consistently compromised was the meal credit card and the only card I let out of my sight. Waiter could scan copy the magnetic strip, copy the expiration date and the 3 secret pin. Never use a company name where one could look up your address. I requested the credit card company to list "business account" and I white out or sharpie over the 3 digit pin but make sure you write your own encrypted numbers with a permanent marker on the card so you don't forget.

No more problem in the last 5 years.

Never use a PC for on line purchase or check bank balance. I set aside an IPAD just for that as viruses rarely invade Apple products.

I pretty much also exclusively use Amex. Obviously some places still won't take it so I have a visa for backup.  And for course my super breachy target redcard.

I love when some restaurants bring out the bill on an AMEX bill plate.  I put down my AMEX card and they say, "Sorry, we don't accept AMEX." haha
