Tonight on my 1.8 mile commute I counted 5 Churches which have popped up in the last few months all occupying what used to be Industrial Buildings.

maybe someone figure if the catholic church has billions to pay for abuse claims, "the churches" must have a "profitable" business model.

When I worked in Watts, I too, was amazed at just how many "churches" there were. Every block had one it seemed. When I asked about it, someone told me that churches were tax exempt organizations and therefore, didn't have to pay property taxes. So they converted buildings in to "churches" for the exempt status... Made sense to me since I rarely saw anyone in these "churches". Anyone?

It seems like Irvine does have a rather large number of churches (and mega churches). Do you think that is another reason for Irvine being such a desirable place to live (ie live in Irvine, work in Irvine, play in Irvine, shop in Irvine, worship in Irvine)?

Usually the simplest explanation ...

There are many families in Irvine and intact families have more of a tendency to attend church.

"There are many families in Irvine and intact families have more of a tendency to attend church." Hmmm, I guess my lifestyle confirms this generalization since I'm not an "intact" family and I am not Christian.

I didn't mean to insult anybody. I just read someplace, and maybe it was wrong, that intact families have more of a tendency to attend church than everyone else. It isn't an insult, just a statistic, and maybe an inaccurate one. And I don't think I said anything about "Christians" or Christian churches, just church in general.

awgee,

I often hear from many families that the main reason they go to church so that they can stay intact as a family. That makes a lot of sense as we do need to be reminded of something that can be taken for granted so easily.

Awgee, forgive my ignorance, but what other kind of churches are there besides Christian ones? If you're Muslim you call it a mosque, and if you're Jewish you go to temple or synagogue. Did you mean to use the word "church" as a generic term, like "Kleenex" for "tissues"? If so, I'm no expert, but I'm thinkin' that might be something lots of people would indeed find offensive.

Sorry if I offended anybody by using church as a generic term. And please excuse my ignorance for not knowing that the only churches are Christian.

I don't believe awgee was trying to insult anyone. I believe he meant to use the term "church" as a gathering place.

His words are being taken too literally.

Peter was asking why there might be so many new "churches" in Irvine. I have no idea if he meant Christian churches or any other "places of worship",( Did I offend anybody with that expression?), but I was just trying to offer him a possible explanation from something I read. It was not a judgement of anybody's form of religion or the status of their family. Geez! It was just something I read.

Awgee, I was raised Catholic and I married into a Jewish family. I don't attend Church or Temple (except for celebrations or funerals) and I didn't take any offense to your comment.

ISM...you are over reacting...With your intelligence, I am sure you KNOW Awgee's comments are NOT intended to be rude to anyone. So he generalized worship place as "churches", so what???? Are we going to have disclaimer and be politically correct starting now to cover all basis on this blog??

Now, if the choice is Cake or Death, well then...
