I finally got one of these things and it's awesome.

Now I don't need a PS3 to stream Netflix, Youtube or local content to a TV.

What? Did I say "local content"? Yeah some of the complaints about the Chromecast is there are only apps that allow you to stream online videos... however using a laptop and a Chrome browser with the Chromecast extension, you can cast local videos to your TV just using Ctrl + O to open a local file in the Chrome browser.

My kid gets a kick out of Chromecasting his YouTube Pokemon episodes from his iPod to the TV.

It's on sale at Best Buy right now for $29.99.

Why pay more? For $30 I stream the two essentials, YouTube and Netflix.

And, you can control it from your phone, tablet, laptop or iDevice.

I don't have lots of iTunes content so I don't need an AppleTV... and I would rather get a Vizio CoStar over a Roku.

Roku supports over 100 additional sevices.http://liliputing.com/2013/11/chromecast-gains-hbo-go-support-still-cant-much-roku.html

Roku list channelshttp://m.roku.com/what-to-watch/now-playing

I just use Roku. I canceled my direct tv and just get my tv content from Roku. If I want to watch news (CBS, Foxnews, NBC, CNBC, WSJ Live, The Motley Fool, Fox Business, The Street aka the street.com).  The length of the news is from 2 - 10 min.

ESPN - highlights, I believe espn 3 is free live games and replay games. But for the regular espn, a person has to log in with there tv/cable provider like uverse.

Food channels - healthy food, Chinese food, drinks, Mexican food, recipe, kosher food.

Fitness & Outdoors - yoga, Pilates, hunting, fitness

There's so many channels for free, also there's channel subscribe like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, red box instant

BTW-I can also control the Roku with my Iphone.

I don't have any movies on iTunes so I don't notice any limits.

I don't travel so that is also a non-factor.

The $60+ difference is 10 months of Netflix.

AppleTV is great but Chromecast is a cheaper solution that fulfills my needs.

What's also cool about the Chromecast is it's powered by the USB port on my TV so no extra power cable needed and when I turn the TV off, it turns off.

You realize that you can rent movies on iTunes?  Or do you prefer paying $15-$20 in the theater for them when they are released instead of when they are released to DVD and iTunes?  Movie rentals on iTunes are far more current offerings than anything on Netflix via streaming, because the studios won't give away their best IP when they can make money on rentals and DVD sales.  So you can wait about a year to see that on Netflix and spend the $72 bucks on 12 months of service for dated material.

That being said, if you still don't value of having that capability, I don't see the benefit that chromecast provides that is not already built into a smart TV.  Based on the use case above, you could have accomplished the same thing by upgrading the TV (since you were going to upgrade your TV anyway).

So if you are trying to save money, you would have accomplished the same thing just by replacing your current TV with one manufactured in the last couple of years and you could have saved your $30 (5 months of netflix).
You realize you keep ignoring the fact that I don't use/like iTunes.

And that's the thing, it's not on a Smart TV, I'm using it on an older TV before TVs became Smart.

It's the TV the kids will use because they love to watch Netflix and YouTube.

Just because you don't see the benefit doesn't mean a benefit doesn't exist... Google has sold a ton of these and I'm just sharing my usage experience for anyone interested, which obviously isn't you.

How does buying a new Smart TV save me money? Hmmm.... $1000 or $30? Let me think.

Do the math.

When I buy the new TV the old one will become the kids' TV. They will probably want to watch Netflix on it.

Easiest and cheapest way to do that, at least for *me*, is Chromecast.

Maybe someone other than you might want to do the same thing.
