CANCUN VS. HAWAII

I understand the Swin Flue is going in Mexico, but travel package to Cancun in Summer is very cheap. Yes, it's hot and humid in July but it's summer and in Carribean. So I was wondering if you have been to Cancun and Hawaii and which one you prefer.

I've been to 3 hawaiian islands and liked them all. I heard very good things about Cancun but it is a foreign country and could be too tourist spot. With same money am I better off stick with Hawaii with two kids in elementray school? Thank you.

i've done cancun in my more youthful days and really have no interest in ever going back. at least july isn't peak frat boy season in mexico.

hawaii on the other hand is really is one of the special places on earth. they are actually most isolated islands on the planet, but many don't realize that because being part of the US and all the cheesy island references in pop culture take much of the exoticness out of Hawaii. outside of the mega-resorts of oahu and maui and their umbrella drinks, there's nothing more exotic and unique than those islands for those that are willing to venture off the beaten path.

on one end you have kauai, with the rainiest and lushest jungles in the world. then on the other end you have the big island, with this planet's newest land - acres and acres of freshly minted black lava pouring into the ocean daily. was there at the end of last yr and the volcanic activity has really started picking up in the past yr or so. also many diving junkies consider the reefs on the kona side of the island better than the great barrier reef. might be tough with two kids but if they're pretty active and able to hike, there's a green sand beach or a crater you can hike through on the bottom of a former lava lake which is still steaming.

the islands have had a growing problem with drugs, esp meth manufacturing. but at least you don't have to worry about kidnappings, murders, corrupt police, not to mention swine flu.

I would goto Hawaii. I love beautiful scenary and beaches. Carribean and Islands are Panda's favorite vacation spots. I've been to Jamaica, Bahamas, and Hawaii but never been to Cancun. I would imagine Cancun is seriously humid in July, therefore i would recommend Hawaii. Hawaii beaches are the BOMB! Goto Hawaii in July and to the Carribeans in December!

Did Cancun last year and Hawaii a few years ago. I'd go with Hawaii, hands down. There's just so much more to do and see there. Cancun is nice...for a couple days. Then you get bored and just end up eating/drinking. I guess this could be good or bad depending on what you're looking for :P

Cancun, all the way... Honeymooned there, I won't be concerned with the swing flu; better yet, I heard you'll have great service, and great rooms. The beach is just plain better; yeah there are white sandy beaches in Hawaii, but far in-between. The water is just better anywhere in the Caribbean versus the Pacific. Head down to Xcarette; we sure had a blast, always promised to head back down there someday; very fond memories enjoy... oh it was July, and humid, but you'll surrive, just makes you slow down a little...

I've been to both. The reason Cancun is so much cheaper in July is that it's hurricane season, so you risk weather. The season officially begins June 1 and the storms used to be concentrated later in the season (late aug/sept) but storms have been known to form in late may. I went in July and it was beautiful 5 of the 6 days. A tropical storm came in from Cuba that last day and what a difference weather makes! I would not go to Mexico today though. Not because of swine flu, but because of crime and lawlessness and I don't see Cancun being immune from this. The government and police do not have control over the cartels and gangs and many of them are in cahoots. It's just not a safe place for a tourist. If you want Carribean, they are all on sale in July.

The best thing about Cancun for non-young adults (ie family/kids) is going to the jungle and seeing the ruins and villiages, or maybe trips to snorkel, but all out of the protected envelope of the city itself.

I wouldn't want to do this in the current crime climate.

Also, it will be way too hot and humid.

HI is the same weather year round, I hear.

Been to both. Depends on what you want.

Are you hotel/pool lounging? Playa/Cancun, the all inclusives take it.

Beach lounging? - Hawaii, one reason only. Sunset. Playa has more beach for lounging under a Palapa though.

Nightlife? - Cancun or Waikiki - it's a wash. Cancun wins over the other Islands though.

Swimming? - Hawaii better water, better reef, more fish.

Snorkling? - Hawaii

Diving? - Hawaii but the Cozumel wall gives it run.

Fishing? - Hawaii

Surfing? - Hawaii

Archelogical bent? Mayan ruins are better, but Hawaiian lore is great.

Hiked the volcano and seeing flowing lava? Obviously Hawaii.

Tequila distillery tour? - Playa/Cancun

Plantation tour/rafting - Hawaii

Coffee? Hawaii big island

Tropical scenery? Hawaii - Kauai or Big Island Hilo side.

The best time we ever had with kids (Costa Rica beats them all without kids) is at the all inclusive Club Med in Ixtapa. We are not typically "all inclusive" types of travelers but this trip enabled us to have a great time and the kids had a blast in the Kid's clubs. The "Kid's Clubs" went up to age 17. We could spend the day together or separately and know that everyone was fine no matter what we did. The water in Mexico in August (our trip) was unbelievably warm and everything about the place was spectacular. I'm sure there's something like that in Cancun and believe me, I've searched in Hawaii and haven't found anything anywhere near the type of experience that was provided for our kids on the Mexico trip. We only chose the Ixtapa location because they accommodated the under 4 kids, I'm sure there's something like in in Cancun for older kids. My husband loved the fishing and the golfing at much less cost than Hawaii.

[quote author="Mcdonna1980" date=1242734016]tmare, we are planning to go to costa rica with our two kids in tow next year. I'm curious why you said it is better without kids.</blockquote>

My kids are too young, I think Costa Rica would be fabulous with the 7+ group. Go for it, it's much better than any Mexico or Hawaii trip out there. We loved it! Just be ready for an extremely active vacation and I hope you don't have any family members that are afraid of snakes, lizards, bugs, frogs, crocodiles, anteaters, sloths, monkeys, bats, etc... because you will encounter them at every turn. One such encounter actually could have killed me but that's a long story.
