Bay Area Dining

We just returned from a trip up north. Our friends and family up in the bay area treated us to some new culinary treats. If you're ever up there I recommend checking out Tommy's, Tartine, and Zachary's.

Tommy's is a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco best known for their 100% Agave tequila menu. My friend, whom introduced me to this place, has his Masters of Tequila from this joint and is currently pursuing his PHD. You can learn all about the club and how to drink your way into the special tequila peoples club on the website. Julio is the expert of the bar and will give you quite an education on tequila. My friend got his Master's at Stanford but he proudly displays his Tequila degree in his office while the other one collects dust under a bed or something.

Tartine is in the Mission District of San Francisco. One of the best places for crossiants in SF.

We had Zachary's pizza in Berkeley. Wow, never had pizza so heavy. For the deep dish pizza they put the sauce over the cheese. I prefer the cheese on top (slightly crisp) which they offer on the thin crust. Both styles of pizza were yum, though.

San Francisco is pacticuly my second home since I'm always there is visit my best friend. I'm hoping some of the other foodies here will share some places to check out next time I'm up there.

Mmmm... I haven't had Zachery's for years... man I miss it. You CANNOT find anything like it here, so don't even try.

Next time you are in the East Bay (very close to Berkeley), try A Cote for some amazing tapas.

And... if you are ready to spread some serious cheddar, indulge yourself with Michael Mina's place.

If you really want some off the beaten path places, then the next time you head up there bump this thread. I have a few up my sleeve, but I will want to check if they are still open.

A Cote in Oakland on College Ave. is pretty awesome.

Arts Crab Shack in Oakland is a good place to go to watch a Raiders game over delectable crab.

Kokkari in Jackson Square is a very, very good Greek restaurant. I'm also very fond of the Modern Okonomiyaki at Izumiya in the J-town mall. It's on the 2nd floor at the far (Webster Street) end of the mall.

A lot of good places on Valencia between 16th and 23rd or so. Although it's a shame that places out there like The Last Supper Club and Watercress have closed.

For a small meal/sandwich, and an interesting choice of teas the Samovar Tea Lounge is worth a visit. The original location is on the edge of the Castro, there's one now in Hayes Valley, and they have one in the Yerba Buena Gardens (SOMA).

Crossroads Cafe in South Beach is a good spot for a coffee and a small meal. It's on Delancy, but the outdoor area is right on the Embarcadero.

OH MY GOD ZACHARY'S. How I love and miss it! My favorite is the spinach and mushroom pizza. It is SO good. I think I'm drooling at the moment.

Down the street from Zachary's is another good place, Cactus Taqueria. They make the most delicious burritos. They use Niman-Ranch meat (or at least they did as of a few years ago). I always go there when I'm up in the Bay Area.

Another good place is La Mediteranee on College Ave. There's one in SF too. Lots of people don't like La Med, but I do. I love their hummus and their veggie plate. They make really good quiche too. And the decor is gorgeous. But the service is really bad. I overlook it because I love the food.

They Bay Area has such wonderful food!

We just got back from SF last week, and would recommend the following places -

Sotto Mare (Columbus & Broadway) - amazing seafood, homely environment

Kokkari - best greek food in town, great lamb chops

Izakaya Mai (downtown San Mateo) - best late night Japanese food (tacoyaki at 11:00pm, what??!). opens late and reasonable price

Good Luck Dim Sum in Richmond district - good luck fighting your way in on Sunday morning
