888 Thanks

I was going to wait for 1000 but considering all our FCBisms with the lucky number 8... I guess this works.

For those wondering... I do actually look at my Thanks meter and view what posts garnered a Thank You.

I've actually wanted to post about this for a while but I'm curious if anyone else loosely tracks their Thanks Yous.

For me, it's not really about "keeping score" (as us men like to do)... it's more about site content, entertainment and being informative. That's why I like forums that have such "rating" systems because it helps members decide what type of posts are helpful, rewards others for their insight or humor and gives the forum a community feeling.

For new members, it helps them see which members are going to give them "good" information... and also adds value to their own posts if tenured members thank them for their posts.

It helps build both content and community so I encourage all members to give thanks when they read something helpful or if it makes them laugh or it's a good zinger that makes IHO look stupid.

As for me, I'll pull a PatStar and request that you stop thanking me because I want to stay at 888. I appreciate all the recognition and when you put in over 6000 posts like I have... there has to be one or two that people are thankful for. :)

Almost 3 years and you have about 6,400 posts with 888 Thank Yous....nice job.  You do a lot of heavy lifting/posting for the forum.  :P

Yes and no. In theory, it would be great if the thanks represented a member's value or helpfulness, however I think in some cases it's much more of a popularity vote. I'm thinking of one member in particular. The member has a high percentage of thanks. I went back to look at how the person is getting all these thank yous. Posts are not made very often. It's predominantly due to quips, jokes, and one-liners. I wouldn't say it's a measure of the member's value but definitely may be perceived as such. In some cases, I believe it can hurt a site when cliques are formed and the popular kids trade thanks with each other over trivial comments or even ridiculing others while other less popular members may post something I find interesting but they don't get rewarded if they are unpopular. I have the IHB forum in mind here. I almost think it would be better to have the like feature, as Facebook does and comments sections on various web news sites do, without it keeping tally. That way you still get a thanks but the focus is on the comment itself rather than Mr. Popular.

Btw, the person I have in mind is not IHO. Present company excluded, of course. IHO is a great member who definitely adds a lot to the forum - both funny and informative / helpful. I like seeing IHO on here over the many years now. Always been a very cool, nice person. An all-around great guy.

sorry I just made it 889
I know you did that on purpose! Now I have to change the title to 889 Thanks.  >:D

The IHB forums and the TI forums have been very cathartic (not in the laxative definition... although sometimes) for me. I'm assuming that since I'm not on Facebook... this is my avenue. I think that also explains the reduction in activity from the old guard from IHB... they all went to FB.

I actually gain quite a bit from this site... from sniffed out City of Irvine documents to back doors to TIC's floorplans to IHS campfires to PS9 food reviews and just the general breadth of knowledge from all the posters here so I kind of have a sense of duty to keep it going. I do wonder if I actually buy somewhere not in Irvine will I fade in activity but I think because most of my life still rotates around Irvine... I won't (unless I move to Porter Ranch... then I'll start up TalkPR with PatStar).

@USC:

Just think of me as the Usain Bolt of TI posting... although World Chaos has a good start.

There is that side of it too.

Some forums don't quantify the exact number of "kudos"/"thanks"/"reps" and just show a general overall star rating of their reputation. Even other sites don't allow you give someone a "rep" or "thanks" if you've already done so in an X amount of time to prevent the rep stacking threads that sometimes come about.

But in most cases, the presence of such a system is better than the lack of one. I think overall, it's a good indicator of who is active and who is posting helpful/entertaining stuff, even if it's just one liners... I like good jokes just as much as I like insightful commentary.

Anyways... I don't really want to get into the pros/cons of Thank You rankings... I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who felt I posted something useful/funny and to encourage others to do the same to their fellow members.

Btw, am I the only one who saw the title and almost fell out of their chair thinking IHO actually bought a house? All the home buying announcement seem to be titled the same way, giving thanks to the agent. LOL.

Trust me, on this one, IHO. Even when you buy or even if you move outside Irvine, you'll still come back. I tried so freaking hard to leave on two occasions and have found it impossible. I don't know why, but you all have become my favorite group of people that I look forward to seeing every day. I do get sick of you guys once in a while  ;), but then I take a break and miss you all again. I come to TI more than Facebook. There are some topics you just don't want to bring up with your group of friends or family on Facebook. For ex: I like discussing personal finances. I feel more comfortable here discussing that. Plus, most of you are smarter than my friends, so that helps.

I agree with this totally.

The anonymity allows you to discuss things that you wouldn't normally with your FB friends and family. I can't even talk real estate with some of my friends. And yes... there are so many people smarter than me here so that's also a plus.

Stop being addicting. Stop it!

I'm usually good for the first month. I get A TON MORE DONE. OMG! A TON! I can not overstate this enough. Feeling great. Best decision ever. Then, the withdrawal symptoms start. I miss Iho, his tips, and his funnies. I wonder what advice qwerty would give. I know I can PM Trojan a dumb question and he won't think I'm stupid but will answer it. I want to see what Baby Irvine is up to 'cause afterall, I know more about his life than I do most of my real friends. How's Homer doing? I haven't talked to CZ in forever besides small talk on FB but it's just not the same. So on & so forth with others. I think I'll just pop in once to say, "Hi". I outright lie to myself saying, "Pfft. I can quit whenever I want." Before I know it, it's back to  my "pack a day" addiction.  ::) Do they have rehab for this?

Thanked, just to mess up your stat ;)
I thought you bought a house too! 888 some place in Yorba Linda (92888?) SoCal, we will meet over wheat grass juice one of these days! Haven't seen you after the surgery. FB still is the primary addiction for me though I don't respond/ write more. I stalk my friends anytime I am free :D

You should thank TI for the "thank you" button positioned at an inch off to the right of my Ipad. Congrats!
Hehe... yeah... I know you've accidentally thanked me... you can always unthank a post... but deep down inside I know you really like me.

We miss your campfires.

Come back, Ishoppr.  :(

I should visit TI more often. This morning checked out RC and patstar's post, and now you are telling me IHS has left? Who is world chaos or more chaos? I thought that was IHS's new avatar.
