Anyone been watching the Towering Inferno at Marquee Place?

Somewhere in the off-topic derailment I helped create was a potentially interesting tangent about the highrises in downtown LA and how they may contrast with similar attempts in OC. In the short term, both sub-markets are doomed to keep on falling like a rock. The reality is that Southern...

Irvine 7th highest median income in US??

I like the way housingtracker breaks down the medians into quarters. That may provide some of the answers you're looking for.

    Dead cat bounce?

The June Case-Schiller #s are decent nationally, but actually pretty bad in Southern California. If there is a "bounce", it didn't start in June. Japan had sequentially lower housing prices for something like 30 quarters in a row from the mid-90s until recently. Why everyone is so...

    CraigsList's Well Runs Dry

Craigslist was started as a listing service for rental properties in San Francisco. It has actually made a fair amount of cash in this capacity. However, the farther away you get from the Bay Area, and the farther away you get from rentals as the main focus, the less useful it becomes.

Irvine 7th highest median income in US??

These are 2007 numbers. Using these #s as evidence of a currently robust economy is about as smart as using last summer's home sale prices as proof of a strong housing market. I would contend that the economic climate has changed just a little in the past year.

I wonder if that income # will represent a peak not seen for quite some time... But >160K is impressive in any case. It is easy to see how Sacramento became so fat and complacent.

    june '08 case shiller

the #s for LA, PHX, LV, SF, FL and DC are indeed crappy. However, the rest of the country is looking decent. I wonder to what extent this is a self-reinforcing trend in those weaker markets - Florida, Arizona and LA, of course, all have a very long history of real estate hucksterism being the...

Funny how those "relax, we've got AIG" commercials are starting to approach the same level of irony as the collapsing-porch WaMu ads.

    Aliso Viejo Discussion Thread

If that is a successful flip, congrats to the flipper. Knife flipping is indeed a treacherous art these days, well done. Not many folks can say they made a profitable trade on south OC RE in 2008.

    Barely surviving on credit cards...

I'm personally enjoying the fact that the literal dozen-a-week CC solicitations I was used to seeing choke my mailbox just a couple of years ago seems to have slowed down significantly. I wonder what the numbers are on that one... Weren't we at well over a billion solicitations a year in the...

Half of O.C. homes selling for less

No, check out 92656 (and a dozen or so others) - it is a lighter shade than most of the zipcodes surrounding it. There is definitely more than one shade of pink, and it seems logical that this would represent the two ends of the 30-60% range. Ah, Leisure World. A safe harbor of steady...

Half of O.C. homes selling for less

Great post! Is there a degree of gradation that the key doesn't show? like maybe 30-45/45-60? It looks like there are six shades instead of five.

    reassessment

I wonder what % of the housing stock in OC will be taxed at a lower value this year? Of course, prop 13 makes this a little interesting. Too bad declining values don't give you a reestablishment of prop 13 basis. They similarly often very little tax benefit when sold at a loss as a...

Another 20%-25% drop in the next 3-4 Years in Irvine?

Universities aren't built overnight. This concept is hard for Irvinites, who can go a full week without seeing a single structure built before 1970 (excepting mighty highway 5 herself, of course). Check out the top 20 entrants in any of the Graduate Schools featured in the US News annual...
