    Recommendations for Gardening Service

qwerty, Thanks for the input! The mowing itself looked simple enough (I also contemplated getting the B&D mower from Home Depot). However, it's the trimming that looks a bit more intimidating. Our gardener trims up the ivy in the back, and also trims our rose bushes and other miscellaneous...

HOMEOWNER SIMPSON - the contractor who did our home renovation has experience as an electrician. You may want to consider giving him a call. His name is Kelvin Lee and his # is 562-991-4146.

    Recommendations for Gardening Service

bones, You pay $65/month to have a gardener come out every week? Could you please provide us w/ his name and contact info (or PM it to me)? We currently pay our gardener $60/month to come every other week. We inherited the gardener from the prior owner, and he services at least 4 or 5 homes...

    General contractor fees? Average?

Our contractor also charged 10% for profit, although we were able to negotiate some of the (smaller) dollar values of some of his labor costs (e.g., he agreed to charge slightly less for changing out a light fixture or mirrors).

Crap... Murphy's Law strikes again... Need HVAC rec

I'm probably a little late to the show on this one, but I'd recommend Thomson Air Conditioning (http://www.yelp.com/biz/thomson-air-conditioning-hawaiian-gardens). I have used them in the past (as have 2 of my friends), and they are very knowledgeable and, in my opinion, priced fairly. I only...

    General Contractor Rec's

Hi elgringo, Kelvin is nearing the finish line of the renovation. We are starting week 8 of the renovation and thus far, he and his crew have completed the following: (1) painted the entire interior (about 2,100 sq. ft.), (2) changed out all of the recessed lights to LED lighting (3) changed...

    Columbus Grove or Portola Springs

As a former resident of Columbus Grove (I lived in the Irvine side of CG), I wanted to give my opinion as well. When I was looking for a place in Irvine about 3 years ago, I looked in (pretty much) all of the Irvine neighborhoods, including Portola and CG. Not being familiar with Irvine, I...

    General Contractor Rec's

Cling, We are in week 3 of our renovation and we did hire Kelvin. He and his crew are renovating the bathrooms, kitchen and family room, painting the interior (including skimcoating a number of walls) and doing some minor electrical work. We are also replacing our flooring but are hiring other...

    Carpet Research

Forgot to mention this yesterday, but one of the carpet stores that we met with was Carpets 4 U in Anaheim. I can't recall what carpet we ended up deciding on, but the gentleman who helped us was extremely patient and took the time to explain the different types of carpet, along with what makes...

    Carpet Research

Since you guys are discussing carpet, I did have a question that I was hoping someone could answer regarding carpet pads. I visited a few carpet places, including Tomkins, and was told that one of the key things to consider is the "upgraded" 8-lb carpet pad v. the 6-lb standard carpet pad. The...

    Designers for Renovation

Hi all, We are planning on undertaking some renovation for our new home (including bathroom and kitchen renovations), and have a pretty good idea of the "look" that we are going for. For those of who have done some renovation to your home(s), I was wondering if any of you have utilized a...

Contractor license & workers compensation insurance

Agreed - I know of someone who checked to ensure the contractor was licensed, but thought nothing of the contractor's insurance. This person also did not have homeowner's insurance. As (bad) luck would have it, one of the contractor's laborers injured himself on the job and sued the contractor...

Contractor license & workers compensation insurance

I just wanted to add that, even if you hired a licensed contractor, he or she may not have insurance (whether worker's comp or general liability insurance). Thus, if one of his laborers gets injured while on the job, the laborer may pursue both the contractor and the homeowner for compensation...

    General Contractor Rec's

Sorry for reviving such an old thread; we are in the process of purchasing a home and are looking for recommendations for contractors that we can interview and obtain estimates from. We will contact the companies that have been recommended in this thread, but would appreciate it if anyone else...

    Portisol Class Action Suit

A $30K payout may have been normal in the 90's, but in today's construction defect lawsuit environment (subcontractors who have gone out of business, subcontractors with no insurance, etc.), it would be surprising if you get 1/3 of that recovery.

    Portisol Class Action Suit

I'm not sure what you are asking, but here are my thoughts based on what I think you might be inquiring about: (1) if you do not sign up for the lawsuit and then sell the home, the new homeowner can still join the lawsuit. (2) if you are not the original owner, you can still join the lawsuit...

    Portisol Class Action Suit

Do you happen to be in the legal industry? Because this explanation is spot-on! At the end of the day, the builder will settle with the plaintiffs' attorney for, a sum of money....let's say $10,000.00/home (can be more or less depending on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, how...

    Home Builder Construction Quality Comparison

It really depends on the area where you live. Several of the builders that are mentioned in this post are clients of ours. I have had previous discussions with some of the on-site customer service representatives, and their experience was that, in the areas where real estate was more expensive...
