    Irvine schools

I agree with IHO- not enough time in the classroom to go over new things.  I feel like the first half of the school year is review on things that should be known and when March comes along, it's the time teachers are cramming new stuff. I know a lot of people seem to hate Kumon- but which kid...

    Irvine schools

I have a 3rd and 5th grader and they go to one of the supposedly better-ranked elementary schools.  I too was told how intense it is- I honestly haven't experienced the intensity so far.

    Class sizes?

fact- but not all the classes.  but if it were 2 classes it would be way over 35 in each class

What is your worst dining experience? Here's mine...

I don't know if I constitute this as my worst- but here is one of my most recent bad experiences- My kids wanted sushi with the revolving gimmick thing. We went to Gaten? Sushi near UCI.  It was HORRIBLE.  Really gross sushi.  Even my kids thought it was bad.

    Thanks Cubic!

    GATE

Cubic- you say GATE and Honors are different, but which is BETTER?  Does GATE really make a difference?  If your kid is in Honors classes for math in middle school- isn't that just as good?  I could see a totally gifted math kid do better in an honors class than a "classified GATE" person who...

    GATE

How important really is GATE?  What if your child is more science/math gifted and less so in English?  Isn't there an Honor or some faster-track math program when they get to middle school- and then they do the AP math/science in high school?  When are they tested for that?  Does it really...

[IHB] Open House Review: 17 Heron

yeah- there's a house over there that is actually 2 houses that have been connected together, but you really can't tell from the street. I wouldn't buy a house on Nighthawk (older homes part) though because there's a lot of traffic on that street.  I also would be annoyed with so many cars...

    Swim School

My kids did beginning swimming at Waterworks and then team/competitive at Nova Aquatics.  Nova has lessons for young kids.  I've seen instructors at Nova with 9 month old babies (and not mommy and me classes- the baby is swimming)

Which would you choose: Woodbridge or PS?

I rented a house in Woodbridge for 3.5 years.  You can't beat the location.  Yes- some of the floorplans are outdated, but it really wasn't that bad.  I personally think anything on the "other side" (North) of Irvine Center Drive is too far and Portola Springs is definitely the boonies

Friday Boredom - Your Pet Peeves

Socal- on the flipside- nothing more gross that a man with a wimpy/damp fingers handshake.  Total turnoff

    Chinese LIMAO, K?QI & Iranian Ta'arof

Nice video seeing beautiful Tehran make me nostalgic.  Roundcorners- maybe the Asian version of ta'arof is doing something out of spite, but it is not the case for Persian ta'arof.  I am of Iranian descent and yes I have to deal with ta'arof- it can be tiring.  It happens more so in my...

    Where to live in Irvine?

I would have said Turtle Rock, but $1 million doesn't get you much there.  You have a large home in the Midwest, and what you could get in TRock for $1 million would be a much smaller home + all the remodelling that needs to be done. Since the job is inland- I would say somewhere in...

    Where to live in Irvine?

Also- where will you/husband/wife be working?  I have never been used to commuting.  Walked to the train and took a train downtown- could work, read, sleep on an express 20-minute train ride home.  I have been here 7 years and still would never want to drive more than 25 minutes to work.  Some...

    Where to live in Irvine?

Where in the Midwest are you from?  I moved out here from the Midwest as well and it was a large adjustment.  How much of a backyard do you want?  THat was a huge shock for me.  Woodbury and newer developments would be a huge adjustment- with little privacy.  Did you live in the Midwest where it...

I need to bring dessert for a dinner party

I need to bring dessert for a dinner party

Tell me your favorite places.  I don't like overly sweet things. Is JJ's/Bon Epi/place in HMart comparable to 85 degrees for cakes?  I am not talking about those bun/rolls things- just cakes. It doesn't have to be an Asian bakery- but I don't care for Layer Cake and I think that French's...
