    Wood-burning fire-pits allowed?

We have a neighbor several houses down on our street that has a wood-burning fireplace.  It stinks up everyone's houses- thank god they are not directly next to us.  You can't open up your windows when they have the fireplace on- the whole house will smell terrible.  It's really annoying.  It...

IrvRes, For one kid that was in the TUSD, it was a level of maturity.  The kid is very bright (lots of awards from teachers in the past), but I think it just didn't click with the child (and did not even get a C in geometry).  The kid will repeat regular geometry as a freshman this year and...

    Nova swim school?

We did Waterworks when kids were very young, then progressed for a year or so at NOVA at pre-competitive level.  I don't know how well your kids swim- there is also Aquazots which has some "Zot" levels that don't require you to do swim meets, but it's cute when you do see them compete.

Chava, We were oscillating as well on whether to do Algebra or CC8.  My daughter already takes Algebra outside of class, so we weren't concerned about having her do Algebra.  Like you, we felt the main issue was taking Geometry in 8th grade.  Several of my friends' experiences whose children...

    Combo Class (Kindergarten/1st Grade)

My son was in 2nd grade put into a 2nd/3rd grade combo class.  At first I was not happy, but the teacher was amazing, and like others have said, she was a very experienced teacher.  After the school year, I actually requested her again- and he had her for 3rd grade but it wasn't a combo class...

IrvRes, Do they combine 7th graders who are doing Algebra with 8th graders who need to do Algebra? I am really surprised at only 14 kids taking CC 7th grade math.  I guess it was a way for parents to have their vote/say on the CC curriculum to sign those waivers.  However, I totally agree with...

Listings that pique my interest... feedback?

I think those $700K in upgrades in the Twiggs house look too "heavy" for me- the vanities, colors, fireplace.  It just seems like it will be dated in no time. For that price, I wouldn't be in Woodbury.

To EV or not to EV, that is the question

For our 3rd car, we got a Ford Focus EV.  Love it.  It's really a fun car to drive and drives very sporty.  With the rebates, it was an extremely affordable car.  We installed the charger at home so the car charges in 3 hours.  We can program the car to charge after midnight-  tells us on the...

Orchard Hills versus Newport Coast with remodel needed over time

The community pool in the Menton subdivision is also really small.  I am not into OH, but I would think the ammenties will be nicer than the $340 you'll pay for a non-guard gated community at NC.

Orchard Hills versus Newport Coast with remodel needed over time

If your choice is Menton- it's a tossup.  There's another neighborhood in that price range as well.  If you are saying that the yard in the NC home is bigger, wow- is all I can say about the OH lot size.    I think OH is too far.  I don't know the floor plan of the OH house, but I have been...

Yes- I got the same information.  After we got that mass email the other week, I immediately emailed just to verify there is no test since it was such a confusing email.  I got a response yesterday saying the exact same thing that was said in Mark's email.  But also, if the child doesn't pass...

No- I didn't see that.  But it is amazing how they don't have the child take the test to take Algebra in 7th grade (and more importantly geometry as an 8th grader), especially since even before CC, taking geometry as an 8th grader has a large % of kids not performing well.  I have a friend...

It's crazy how all of a sudden IUSD just throws in the towel and is letting the parents decide.  They must have gotten bombarded with calls/complaints. I am surprised that there is no exam for the student who didn't pass MSMAT and the parent can decide to do Algebra regardless of taking the 8th...

Irvinecommuter- I don't disagree with you the merits of new methods of critical thinking.  you said:  I am sure that there were sample problems that your child got to practice. Actually, there weren't any sample problems on the test on the IUSD website.  Before the exam, there were sample...

I am not a stuck up parent, nor did I say my child is a genius. If a kid is going to be tested on material, then it should have been introduced in the classroom beforehand.  I think most reasonable people would agree with that.
