How long should it take to have a downpayment?

Acquiring a depreciating asset is a bad financial move regardless of how it is financed
Not getting to work is an even worse financial move. I'll keep my job and my car loan. ;-)

Hyundai Genesis - Who's heard of it?

I'd avoid the 18's simply for the tire replacement cost and the reduced ride compliance. Shorter sidewalls only help handling to a point, then there's too much of a good thing.

Hyundai Genesis - Who's heard of it?

I think the chromes are optional. Never underestimate an American's ability and willingness to exercise poor taste.

The depression of 1929 is the wrong model for the current economic crisis

David Lereah said that Boomers would become net buyers of real estate as they enter their retirement years. Why not equities? ;-)

My landlord just lowered my rent $250 bucks

Sorry for the thread hijack... I was surfing South OC rentals last night and it seems like rental rates for many commercial complexes have taken a nose dive in the last few months. I'm seeing 1br's at $100-150 off what they cost a year ago. I'm even seeing what appear to be reductions at IAC...

How long should it take to have a downpayment?

Cash in hand is worth two in the bush? Oh wait... In my case, I scored an auto loan for 4.25%. I'd rather have the cash in the bank and pay some interest than be debt-free and not have that cash. If the interest rate were higher, I might think otherwise.

The depression of 1929 is the wrong model for the current economic crisis

From that Wiki article: The outbreak of equine influenza in 1872 had a pervasive effect on the economy. Called the ? Great Epizo?tic?, it had an effect on every aspect of American transportation. The whole street railway industry ground to a halt. Locomotives came to a halt as coal or...

The depression of 1929 is the wrong model for the current economic crisis

That's what struck me the most about the article... We have a fiat money this time around. And helicopters. Although as Mish says, you can print all you want but you cannot force banks to lend it or force consumers to borrow and spend it. A high supply of money might not help matters if...

The depression of 1929 is the wrong model for the current economic crisis

Apologies if this has been posted already. I did do a search... The Real Great Depression As a historian who works on the 19th century, I have been reading my newspaper with a considerable...

How long should it take to have a downpayment?

In mid-2003, for the first time in my life, I was in the financial position to buy a home. I'd been on the job for six months and had my debt under control. However, I felt that there was a nasty housing bubble brewing and I refused to buy. I only started seriously saving for a house about 42...

How long should it take to have a downpayment?

Assuming a house price of 3x my current income, I managed to go from nothing to 20% down in about 42 months. I made 401k contribs the entire time, though I did cut back my payroll contribs to 5% for most of this period. It can be done... One just has to put their foot down and say "enough...

Hyundai Genesis - Who's heard of it?

I think it's a great first attempt by the Koreans. People had a difficult time taking the 1989 Lexus LS400 seriously, though it was a more competitive car in its time than the Genesis is today. Give it some time...

Bike Industry Business School - Credit Crunch Edition...

That's easy to deal with. One need only drop the snobby Campagnolo/Sidi fetish and just buy Ultegra goodies for now. The pinheads in the peloton can FOAD if they don't like your bike's giblets.

Straw Poll regarding gas milage. and possible Oil consumption Ideas

You could write a thesis on what is wrong with Detroit. One or two of these guys aren't going to make it.
Here's a good start. Then <a...

Straw Poll regarding gas milage. and possible Oil consumption Ideas

1-2 years later watch for "WTF was I thinking" when we can't seem to get global oil production to ramp beyond 85 million barrels per day and resale on those things takes a digger again. I don't think that many people truly learned much from this experience.

Straw Poll regarding gas milage. and possible Oil consumption Ideas

Four bucks a gallon clearly wasn't enough to induce capitulation. The 300hp 6000lb SUV entitlement mentality is alive-and-well. Indeed the little econocars are less safe but that'll get better after the heavy dinosaurs become mostly extinct. Might take a while with oil sliding under $80...

Straw Poll regarding gas milage. and possible Oil consumption Ideas

Americans are looking for a huge SUV with 3rd row seating that costs $.10/mile to operate. If only those meanie car companies would hurry up and make it. (puke)

HOLY SMOKES : Did i read this right? Dow below 10,000 S&P;1,100 Nasdaq 1500. Is this possible by October?

So I'm sitting here looking over the options for my IRA at Fidelity. I can buy pretty much anything with this account. Any of the gold ETF's deemed trustworthy?

HOLY SMOKES : Did i read this right? Dow below 10,000 S&P;1,100 Nasdaq 1500. Is this possible by October?

Well roll me in sh!t and dip me in cracker crumbs. 800 point rally on the Dow within the space of one hour. Obviously someone told the PPT that I had just placed a 401k transfer order to move 5% of my nest egg from a stable value fund into index funds. I'll get today's closing price on my...
