Masks?

of course there was, there was swine, avian flu, regular flu, Zika, you name it viruses and things in the air have been killing people for millennia

The flu variants were a concern but well known, the more applicable comparison is the original SARS outbreak in 2003, that didn’t make it out.

Still lacking context. What were the number of deaths in the last 5-10 years of any of these compared to Covid in the US?

Anecdotally... I know no one who died of anything on your list... but I know at least 4 people who died of Covid in the last 4 years.

CDC estimates up to 60.8 million people were infected with swine flu. That flu led to an estimated 274,304 hospitalizations and, according to estimates, 12,469 deaths in the US.

I'd still mask up in crowded area or sick.
I did that when taking air planes and at conventions for years even before covid, COVID doesn't change that.

Regarding to covering your mouth when sneezing or coughing. Just freaking do it as a common courtesy.
No one need to have your spit on their face.

Had a co worker being called out by his neighbor for not covering his mouth when consistently sneezing for the day.
That Mofo's response? "Can you shut up? No one is fast enough to cover their mouth while sneezing"

oh yeah, it's the same idiot that tried to come into work, while tested positive positive for COVID a day prior.

I would be kind of weirded out that you went out of your way to tell me you had covid and wish you well. Then I would go back to minding my own business. I could care less whether you wear a mask or not in this scenario.
I realize we are talking about 2 things here.
#1 Is Covid real? or is it just the flu? (even if it were just the flu why would you want the flu?)
#2 Do masks work?

Since this is a mask thread I will focus on that. My reasoning is:
Masks work because you were taught to cover your mouth when you cough and a mask is an extension of that.

Roughly 25M to 50M infections annually. 12M to 24M medical visits annually. 300k to 600k hospitalizations annually. Roughly 25k to 50k die annually in the US from flu.

You know how to google right? You can google this stuff in 15 seconds

1) Obviously Covid is real. But the wild type strain from 2019/2020 hitting people with no immunity is very different than today's strains and immunity.
2) There's plenty of studies out there that suggest masks do, don't, and might work. Take your pick and go with it. My point is whether a person wears one or not is none of my concern. If you feel like it works and it makes you feel safe and polite, by all means wear one. Put on your lucky socks, wear your favorite outfit for that important event, take two practice swings before you hit the golf ball, don't shave your face during play offs, drive in the lane you think will get you to your destination the best. Go for it. I think an obsession with controlling what other people do and getting upset when they don't do the thing you want them to do is a futile use of time. Go live your best life, love your family, be the best person you can be, and treat others with enough kindness and respect to let them do the same. Mask or no mask. Move on.

Covering your mouth or sneezing into your elbow has always been accepted as a polite way to sneeze. Dawning a mask is a more recent development that shouldn’t be polite or not. Elbow will due but if you want to mask up…by all means do.

Except you didn't answer the question... how many flu deaths vs Covid?

That's the context.

We get it... you and morekaos think it's no big deal... maybe neither of you knew anyone who worked in healthcare or had someone close to you die... but just like you don't want anyone to mandate masks on you... you can't mandate your reality on ours.

How about you do the googling for a change? Show me US covid cases and deaths in the last 12 months. Include only deaths where covid is the main cause of death.

The asian are the most inconsiderate of all. They’d sneeze or cough in your face instead of covering their nose/ mouth or cough into their elbow/ shoulder. If you're afraid of getting Covid, flu or whatever, then mask up or stay home

You're moving the narrative here. We were talking about when the mask mandates went into effect and why... unknown virus... mounting death numbers... so you do whatever you can no matter how small the percentage.

No one has to google to know the deaths from end of 2019 to 2022 were magnitudes greater than any flu variant in the last 10 years.

If you're talking about mask mandates now (since you are asking about that last 12 months), maybe you should google because they've been lifted so what are you whining about? Do you see me demanding that they should be put back? Relax... you're projecting.

Where's the irony? You assume you know my answer to your question and then go on to criticize my imagined answer.
The irony is in your quote. I did not assume your answer... I said the debate of pro life vs pro choice when compared to the debate over Covid measures has the same futility that you're complaining about.

Who is really making the assumptions here?

The conversation was about yes/no mask today in a hypothetical situation of Zubs and I riding on a bus together. Now you're talking 2019-2022 covid deaths, mask mandates, abortion. JFC. Seems like you just want to argue about things. Not interested.

That was a separate conversation though.

Your "Google" answer to him was his conversation with moretroll specifically about 2019-2022 Covid deaths vs. flu deaths.

I thought given the conditions of this new pandemic, the CDC and America in general did pretty well. California who had stricter covid rules had less people die while FL and AZ with looser rules had more death.

Now that COVID is over we should look back at how we responded to this once in 100 year black swan.
Looking at the evidence, masks had a positive effect during the pandemic and should be mandated if we find ourselves in this situation once more.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've forgotten more than once that these masks/covid conversations never go anywhere. Shame on me for engaging yet again.
