I was actually caught by surprise this 4th of July by something that I hear only happens outside of Irvine... a real bonafide block party.

Back when I was a kid and restrictions on fireworks were almost non-existent, J4 was the day we would run out in the street and get together with the other families and light stuff up. The next day was always interesting to see how big were the burn marks and whose grass got the worst of the previous night's festivities.

Those days seemed to have disappeared as each city "banned" fireworks and you were relegated to watching parades or city shows. The last few years we have had the benefit of the Woodbridge Lake show and it was always great but since we could watch it from home and our young kids were a bit scared of the noise, we just usually watched from our front yard or sometimes ventured out to the lake or even the community park. Every year it seems to get more crowded, we have even gone to the Heritage Park show a few times and cars would be stopped in the middle of the street taking in the pyro display.

This year, we got stuck at a party in Mission Viejo (where there was no block parties going on) and were trying to get home by 9pm to see the show but ran into the closed streets in Woodbridge. So we tried to go around the blockade and lo and behold... several streets in the Landings area of Woodbridge (the same ones I mentioned last year with extravagant holiday lights) had these huge crowds of people in their driveways and streets not only watching the show but lighting their own fireworks. It reminded me of my youth and was happy to see that the rumors of the "Impersonal Irvine" were not true in this particular neighborhood.

For any other Irvinites out there (esp the newer areas)... did you guys see any social gatherings?

happy 4th to all!  hope everyone has a blast today

we are going to pat stars hood and enjoying the fireworks from our friends awesome view house...does it become a tradition after 3 years in a row?

our 4th of July days are typically very "unIrvine" which makes it fun - our friends in Artesia usually throw a get together topped off by fireworks from Pahrump, NV (near Area 51 land).

This year was no different in that it was very entertaining.  It was a pseudo-block party in that several neighbors also had their own armament of mortars, rockets, and the like.  One neighbor had the music blaring at a high volume (a lot of old skool rap) and there were many in the streets for the actual firework show.  Great food, friends, family and fireworks made it a really enjoyable day/evening.  Too bad we had to end the party early (I hate the mid-week holidays)!  Only bad thing was that their were kids setting of M-80's and it was a bit loud for my taste (also worried about my 20 mo old daughter).    Also, near the end, the neighbors got bored and started lighting mortars in the middle of the street (was cool to see, but probably a bit dangerous).    You definitely won't experience anything like this in Irvine.  It's pretty funny that on the way home (Anaheim, Orange, Tustin/Santa Ana) on the 5, you see mini illegal firework shows off the sides of the freeway...

The BIG 4th is coming and I wonder what some of the TIers are going to do?

At first we thought about going out to LV. But not sure if it will be a good idea.

I ran across, article and it has some good ideas to spend the time watching firework and listen to music all for free.

Although, I think it might be promotions by these casinos to lure family and potential gamblers to stay in town and not going to the big casino in Las Vegas. I wonder if this worth it?

With summer underway several Southern California casinos offer fun things to do for free throughout the month and July?s freebies include firework displays to celebrate Independence Day

I think there are two main firework shows in Irvine, one from Heritage Park and the other from south of Woodbridge South Lake.

I'm not sure if they added one over by the Great Park.

Over the years we are either on vacation (so we've seen fireworks in different cities), at Disneyland, or at home (we used to live right by where the fireworks were so we could see them from our house).

Las Vegas does a really good show... I think we've only seen the one at Lake Las Vegas, but I think the Strip/Downtown has several going on.

Never been to any of the SoCal casinos for the 4th.
