An educational facility that operates on the positive mantra ?good happens? will open this weekend in Irvine?s University Center, with classes and workshops that are geared toward children and young adults, and are focused on peacemaking, effective communication and environmental awareness.

Free workshops and a street painting exhibition will be among the activities marking the opening of the Center for Living Peace, which will encourage exploration of self and the world through arts, culture and technology.

?We strive to promote inner peace and help people make good happen within their community,? says founder Kelly Smith, a Newport Beach resident. ?We will inspire and teach through our diverse classes and programs that help people develop the skills to bridge their positive intentions to conscious and positive action.?

The center is located across the street from UC Irvine on Campus Drive at Bridgeport Road. Classes cost $10 to $40 and include Smiling Monkey Yoga for Kids, Tapping the Body?s Wisdom for Girls, meditation and art classes by the Orange County Museum of Art. A monthlong Video Production for Kids course costs $350.

The center will donate 10 percent of class fees to the Irvine Public Schools Foundation whenever anyone enrolling in a course mentions the nonprofit.

Smith says her goal is to create a place that enables people to improve their well-being and fosters a desire serve the community.

?To me, this is what ?living peace? is all about. We start with ourselves and our own inspiration, and then extend our help and care to others,? says Smith.

The center is currently offering free classes to women and children through the Human Options domestic violence shelter in Irvine, and to teens through Boys Hope Girls Hope in Costa Mesa.
