Irvine man dies in plunge from hotel roof

April 17, 2010 | 10:46 pm

A 40-year-man fell to his death late Friday night from the rooftop of an Irvine hotel, Irvine police confirmed Saturday.

The man, an Irvine resident, had checked in alone at a Marriott hotel in the 2800 block of Main Street earlier Friday evening, said Lt. Henry Boggs of the Irvine Police Department.

The hotel?s roof is not open to the public and the man ?got to the roof through an unauthorized means,? Boggs said. His presence on the roof was confirmed because officers found some ?personal effects? there.

It isn?t clear whether the man jumped or fell, but no foul play is suspected, Boggs said.

The man landed on a sidewalk adjacent to the hotel, which is set back from the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not want to characterize the cause of death until the county coroner could examine the body of the man, whose name the department has not yet released.

I'm no Sherlock Holmes, but cause of death appears to be sudden, gravity assisted decelleration.
