Register ranks O.C.'s best elementary schools

Orange County's best public elementary schools challenge students with a rigorous curriculum, promote parental involvement and encourage good behavior.

For the second straight year, we review test scores, federal ratings, student data, misconduct figures and other measures to rank the county's 388 elementary schools ? the first of three installments in the Register's 2010 Best Public Schools report.

Isojiro Oka Elementary School first-graders Mikaela Orloff, Justin Garcia , Max Donaldson, and Peyton Vida enjoy a visit from "Wolfie," the school's mascot, during lunch recently.

This year, Isojiro Oka Elementary in Huntington Beach rose among its peers to claim the No. 1 spot, thanks to a combination of strong academic improvement, innovative programs and other measures.

The data also reveal the county's struggling campuses, many of which share characteristics: high poverty rates, a large percentage of English learners and other challenges that can impede progress.

FV IMO will be the city heading up the school ranking. Children of 1.5 generation immigrants living in FV because of parents are also filial to grand parents stayed close by Little Saigon. Multi-generational living among the families allowing grand parents to teach them about the importance of education.
 
It's very interesting that the most common suspects (ie Bonita Canyon and TRock Elementary) didn't fare so well.

It might be because of the criteria they're using. Their methodology includes fitness test results, diversity, school environment, etc, as well as academics.
