[IHB] How Will the Orange County Great Park be Built without Redevelopment Money

Only greed driven developer mentality is able to execute this project. In the hands of beauracracy this could only idle and eventually die with just a lukewarm execution. The public facilities are ambitious but without corporate support. The biggest problem City of Irvine is playing Hatfields and also the McCoys. Political favors and dealing with the real McCoy enable the city to have the wealth but Greatpark is a Hatfield territory. Without funds from the McCoys City will not be able to launch this project.

Why do we care about the Great Park? It's a concept that killed an airport in Irvine which is already good enough.

First Sunday of the month's food trucks, farmers market and flea market is good enough and just leave it at that. The El Toro Y has really bad traffic and let's not add more population.

I wonder how many people in Irvine really wanted an airport instead of Great Park?

With John Wayne nearby... there wasn't a need for El Toro International.

We get enough noise from the domestic flights... imagine the larger jets coming and going over Irvine (do any of you remember when the marine helicopters used to run their drills and how noisy it was?).

While I admit that the additional commerce/jobs would have been nice (as well as being able to fly to Europe without having to drive 40 minutes)... with everyone here complaining about landfills, cell phone towers, power lines and freeway smog... fuel runoff and airplane pollution would have made for even more fodder.

International Airport would be great for FCBs. One nonstop flight from Shanghai to Irvine. Property value will skyrocket and for those who own a motorcourt home with a patio yard could become the Park Ave mansion by having that small outdoor green in the future metropolis.

You don't get it.  Less park means more housing means more population means more traffic.

Aren't we saying the samething or are you talking about foot traffic for the food truck/farmers market?

"Five Point is seeking permission to build 9,500 residences, with an option to build 1,200 more in place of other development. That's a sharp hike from the 3,625 homes the city approved in 2003 and the 4,894 it OK'd last year."

Wow! That's a huge increase. These developers don't give a damn about traffic. They just want to pack in as many homes as possible to maximize their profit. Doubling this project is adding an extra 10,000+ residents! I hope this isn't approved.

whats the alternative?  they cant make it a park anymore as that money is gone...so its either housing or commercial.  was really hoping for a park and it sucks that it wont happen

The Great Park is still getting built... it may just be different from the original plans.

According to the article, the money that 5-Points is paying for the additional homes will go towards developing a sports complex and lake.

What is the basis of the suit? The Great Park development is not directly adjacent to the Laguna Beach border. Is it simply traffic from Heritage Fields will congest the 133 corridor?

Tustin and Newport Beach already sued Irvine for too many homes.  Part of the settlement is they can't sue again, so now it's Laguna Beach's turn.
