Throwback diner shines amid waterfront luxury

The term "hidden gem" gets thrown around pretty loosely, but they don't get much more tucked away than the Galley Cafe, which is in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

I only know of this spot because Newport Beach is part of my beat; otherwise, can't say I ever would have stumbled across the 57-year-old diner, which is three turns off PCH, amid one of the city's most exclusive neighborhoods, at the end of a dead-end street, right on a public marina.

The set-up is classic - big comfy booths and maybe a dozen seats right at the counter - and so is the menu, featuring a big selection of home-style breakfast, lunch and dinner favorites.

Has anyone tried it out?
