The Pleasant Peasant, a rustic French bistro in Newport Beach, has closed. The restaurant will reopen as Il Barone Ristorante in mid-January, according to the new owners, Donatella and Franco Barone.

Barone spent nearly 20 years at Antonello. His wife was the general manager for years at Antonello's sister restaurant, Nello Cucina at South Coast Plaza.
In a phone interview Thursday, Donatella said it was time for them to take a "step forward" and open their own business. So, they took over the lease of the Pleasant Peasant when it closed last month before Thanksgiving.
"It's always been a dream to open our own restaurant," she said. "It will be home-cooked dishes with a Southern flair and a lot of family recipes."
