Efforts to boost diversity could include widening recruiting efforts, getting more context on applicants? backgrounds and offering spots to students before they even apply

Maybe they should just abandon racial discrimination in admissions.  It's frowned upon in every other aspect of society, but for some reason touted as "enriching the college experience".

The funny thing is once you admit a highly diverse class (based on skin color), the students go back to self-segregating in many instances.  They choose to live in dorms with people of their own color and participate in graduation ceremonies exclusive to people of their own background.  It seems like a contradictory message for colleges to talk up diversity (based on skin color), but to fund these programs of self-segregation that reduce the everyday diversity experienced by students on campus.
