WHO skipped Nu and Xi to get to Omicron.
Nu was skipped so it wouldn't be confused with "new", which is understandable.
Supposedly, Xi was skipped to avoid "avoid stigmatizing a region", but we all know it's to avoid offending Xi Jinping. ;D

I?m a bit meh about the new variant. Not that it isn?t concerning, but I pretty much assume it?s already out and global. Britain, Germany, Amsterdam, Israel all have confirmed it?s there already.
If we look at Michigan, it?s current spike is a bit abnormal compared to other States? Delta surges. Not in intensity, in reports that 25%-30% of the people in the hospital are vaccinated. I wonder if they?ve been sequencing or just assuming it?s still delta. This UofM graphic isn?t out of the ordinary for what I?ve seen with the current surge.
It?s too late on Omicron. Containment isn?t an option. We?re just going to need to buckle up, identify the rates like the graphic above and figure out how bad the exposure is for each group.

Dr. Fauci seems to think that Omicron has spread to the U.S., but we haven't seen a spike yet, so we'll see.
But we know for sure that it has reached Germany, UK, and Netherlands since those countries are seeing a spike. Even France is seeing a spike.

The University of California, San Francisco conducted genomic sequencing of the individual's test, and the CDC confirmed it was the Omicron variant.

The timeline on that first San Francisco Omicron case is out.
Monday November 22nd, before Thanksgiving, arrives at SFO from South Africa.
Thursday Nov 25, Thanksgiving, felts first symptoms.
Three days later, Nov 28th, gets test.
Monday 29th, positive result.
Tuesday 30th, sequenced by UCSF.
Also reported on the 27th, Amsterdam says two flights from South Africa carrying 600 passengers had a 10% Covid positive cases rate with 61 positive passengers. 13 of which where Omicron. Simple math says 48 had one of the other Covid variants.
In other words, flights for THANKGIVING where toxic superspreader events.
Hopefully Omicron sticks with early anecdotal reports of being mild but highly transmissible.

2nd Omicron case now. Minnesota man traveling to NYC. He attended Anime NYC 2021 convention at the Javits Center from Nov. 19-21. Hope he didn't spread it.

Omicron is now found in 5 states, California, Colorado, Minnesota, NY, and Hawaii.
