Amazon’s Grocery-Store Plan Moves Ahead With Los Angeles Leases

Stores are also expected in Chicago and Philadelphia

Esther Fung Oct. 1, 2019 7:00 am ET

“Amazon.com Inc. is advancing a plan to open a chain of U.S. grocery stores with early outposts in Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia, according to people familiar with the matter.

In the Los Angeles area, it has signed more than a dozen leases, the people said. The first few stores are likely to be in the dense suburban locations of Woodland Hills and Studio City, while another grocer is slated for the city of Irvine, in nearby Orange County, a person familiar with the matter said. These stores could open as early as the end of the year.

Amazon is planning to operate dozens of grocery stores in cities across the country, part of the online giant’s increasing focus on a bricks-and-mortar presence to find more ways to reach consumers...”

I would definitely check it out. I'm already a big Amazon fan and prime member. Although I'm a little confused about their grocery store strategy. They spent $13B buying Wholefoods 2 years ago and have been integrating it into the Amazon universe with prime discounts, average lower prices and delivery ever since. Why aren't they extending that brand to more places with the smaller 365 brand stores?

Interesting article talks about the changes in the grocery industry since the WF purchase:

Despite Amazon controlling almost 30% of online grocery sales in 2018, it only has a 3% overall grocery market share. Even though the % of consumers who grocerry shop online is increasing annually, the vast majority buy at brick and mortar locations. Online sales only represented 5.5% of overall grocery sales in 2018.

Here is the breakdown of market sales share:

25% – Walmart/Sam’s Club
11% – Kroger
6.8% – Albertsons/Safeway
6.4% – Costco
47% – Others

My guess is Amazon will go low price with their branded stores and let Whole Foods bubble back up in price to meet that market.

Safeway does this with Vons and Pavilions.

Don't know about your experience, but the last few times I've been in a Whole Foods, the prices, quality, and cleanliness of the stores are really lacking compared to when they were a stand alone brand. Sprouts opened a big store off of El Toro Road that I prefer to shop at now.

My .02c

I don't see why COVID would impact Amazon moving there - they haven't seen cash flows challenged and probably would benefit from enhancing their distribution in the area (more deliveries) - which has only increased anyway during COVID.
