Amazon?s Grocery-Store Plan Moves Ahead With Los Angeles Leases

Stores are also expected in Chicago and Philadelphia

?Amazon.com Inc. is advancing a plan to open a chain of U.S. grocery stores with early outposts in Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia, according to people familiar with the matter.

In the Los Angeles area, it has signed more than a dozen leases, the people said. The first few stores are likely to be in the dense suburban locations of Woodland Hills and Studio City, while another grocer is slated for the city of Irvine, in nearby Orange County, a person familiar with the matter said. These stores could open as early as the end of the year.

Amazon is planning to operate dozens of grocery stores in cities across the country, part of the online giant?s increasing focus on a bricks-and-mortar presence to find more ways to reach consumers...?

I would definitely check it out. I'm already a big Amazon fan and prime member. Although I'm a little confused about their grocery store strategy. They spent $13B buying Wholefoods 2 years ago and have been integrating it into the Amazon universe with prime discounts, average lower prices and delivery ever since. Why aren't they extending that brand to more places with the smaller 365 brand stores?

Interesting article talks about the changes in the grocery industry since the WF purchase:https://www.digitalcommerce360.com/...ods-acquisition-changed-the-grocery-industry/

Despite Amazon controlling almost 30% of online grocery sales in 2018, it only has a 3% overall grocery market share. Even though the % of consumers who grocerry shop online is increasing annually, the vast majority buy at brick and mortar locations. Online sales only represented 5.5% of overall grocery sales in 2018.

Here is the breakdown of market sales share:

25% ? Walmart/Sam?s Club
11% ? Kroger
6.8% ? Albertsons/Safeway
6.4% ? Costco
47% ? Others

My guess is Amazon will go low price with their branded stores and let Whole Foods bubble back up in price to meet that market.

Safeway does this with Vons and Pavilions.

Don't know about your experience, but the last few times I've been in a Whole Foods, the prices, quality, and cleanliness of the stores are really lacking compared to when they were a stand alone brand. Sprouts opened a big store off of El Toro Road that I prefer to shop at now.

Amazon building new grocery store at Irvine Market Place (old Baby R US location):

Anyone know if this is still happening?
I don't see why COVID would impact Amazon moving there - they haven't seen cash flows challenged and probably would benefit from enhancing their distribution in the area (more deliveries) - which has only increased anyway during COVID.

They're hiring for workers...so they must be opening soon.

The Dash Carts look cool. You still need to scan items into the cart or enter a PLU code for fruit.

Check out Amazon's webpage explaining the new cart:

Amazon Fresh grocery store opens at Irvine Market Place
The store includes national brands and the 365 organic line, plus lots of automated tech.

Amazon has opened its Fresh grocery store concept at the Irvine Market Place, the second in Southern California to open in recent weeks.

The store, in a former Babies R Us just east of the 5 freeway, has been in the works for months and has been used since early spring as a waystation for Amazon Fresh grocery deliveries. Its first day open to the public was Thursday, according to employees.

With little notice to the community, the store nonetheless was busy with Amazon Fresh employees making their way through aisles fulfilling customers? online orders. Dozens of other Amazon store employees were at the ready to help customers navigate and learn the technology that makes this supermarket concept one of a kind.

Fresh is what most Amazon shoppers would expect from the e-commerce titan. Alexa is handy in the aisles to guide shoppers (?Alexa, where are the Pop-tarts?? or ?Alexa, what pairs well with steak??), and high-tech grocery carts automatically scan merchandise. Other automated features include a checkout aisle without the cashier. Customers use their Amazon app to generate a QR code that is then scanned by the cart. When a shopper walks through the smart cart exit lane, items are charged to the credit card on the account automatically.

We got a first-person tour Thursday. Here are some things to note:

?Amazon?s Dash Carts have a limited capacity and are engineered for smaller hauls. Two to three brown grocery bags will fit the compartment.

?Block the scanner with a case of water and the cart will not be able to scan more groceries.

?Find an item without a barcode (I found a packaged doughnut missing the sticker) and it won?t scan. Find another doughnut!

?The carts have a weight sensor, so if you drop in an item that doesn?t scan, lights inside the cart turn orange, indicating a malfunction or missing price.

?Yes, you can buy alcohol using the smart cart. But two lights on the cart will turn blue, indicating items will require approval at the contactless checkout line.

?You cannot take the Dash Cart out of the store, so either carry your bags or switch them to a standard cart.

?There are standard carts for bigger shopping trips. Shoppers will have to use a traditional cashier lane at checkout.

?The store is big and is considered full service. An Amazon associate told me it?s the biggest so far among those under development or open. It has aisles packed with recognized brands and unique items made for Amazon.

?There?s a kitchen with hot foods like pizza, a ?carvery,? a station for sandwiches made to order and freshly made sushi.

?Amazon returns can be made here. In the back corner of the store is a customer services center with lockers for online pickup and a counter to return goods bought online. No packaging necessary, associates say, just make sure you have a barcode for the item.

Amazon touts low prices, national brand items and its own proprietary 365 organic line. Deals for the grand opening include $2.69 for a 12-pack of Coca-Cola; buy one get one free Frito-Lay chips; $0.59 cents per pound for green D?Anjou pears; $7.29 for each 8-ounce Panorama Meats USDA organic beef ribeye steak; and $5.79 for a 55-count Sour Patch, Twizzlers, & Jolly Ranchers Halloween candy assortment.

The first Amazon Fresh opened in mid-September in Woodland Hills. Several more are planned, including stores in Fullerton, Whittier, Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Address: 13672 Jamboree Road., Irvine

Hours: 7 a.m. ? 10:00 p.m. daily

Amid the pandemic, the Irvine store will be open from 7-8 a.m. to serve customers age 60 and older, those with disabilities and those whom the CDC defines as high risk.

Masks and social distancing are required.

There were about 20 people waiting outside and I turned my car around. I love tech but no way I'm waiting in line to just buy groceries. I'll try again during the weekday.

This is also happening.

A site plan filed with Santa Ana shows Amazon plans to build a one-story, 112,485-square-foot warehouse, or ?delivery station building,? on a now-vacant parcel behind the newspaper?s former office building.

The new warehouse will join one other in Mission Viejo, where Amazon is converting a recreational vehicle storage facility into another ?last mile? delivery station.
