CA SDI tax going up 10-16.5% in 2020

Great news! for those on the dole

If you're a wage slave, you'll be paying at least 10% more in CA state disability tax next year.

The withholding % goes up from 1% to 1.1%, guaranteeing you'll pay at least 10% more on ever dollar earned.

And if your income is enough to actually have a decent life here, you'll also be paying that 1.1% on a larger share of your income, $125,462 vs $118,371 in 2019. 

The 6% increase in income base is bad enough (because how many people actually got a 6% raise last year?), but the 10% on top of that is just rubbing salt in the wound.

I don't plan to move anywhere else while working, but shit like this DOES encourage me to retire sooner, and to a different state.

Just like the social security taxable wage base, the last several years it?s been going up something like 4% a year. Yet the inflation number that drives actual social security benefits is like 1.5% or some shit like that.

So if you make $100k your annual contribution goes from $1,000 to $1,100, correct?  Approx $8 more per month?

That's exactly how they're hoping people will see it.  "Just $8/month".  Or $2000 after 20 years, assuming no further increases and the salary stays the same.  Or $4000 if 2 spouses each make $100k a year (they probably aren't living in Irvine).  Or nearly $8000 in 20 years if you happen to hit the cap (which, of course, is going to go up every single year).  Or $16000 in 40 years since we can't retire until 67.  And that's just from this 1 increase.  Why downplay it?  That's $16000 that won't make it to the retirement fund or to little Bobby and Suzie's college funds.  As if we don't already have some of the highest income taxes in the country.  All these small turds in the punch bowl add up to a really shitty brew.
