This thread I want to say is about cheating, pay someone to write an essay for you potentially, altering documents/photos, fake test scores, tax fraud (expense for college prep), connections to get into college

The question is why spend that much effort to get into that school.  The answer is in the potential benefits from attending and graduating from the school.

Better schools offer better potential benefits.  But ultimately it's still up to the student to make use of social networks/alumni networks, and the degree to get foot through the door to a lifetime of benefits.

Hmm ... the privilege and support system that got many of these people in, also exists to get them plum jobs after graduation. In many cases the doors were already “open” so to speak

What one should look at is students from non privileged backgrounds and how did they end up doing in these elite colleges compared to those who already come from access.

Interviewed 14 kids this year for my college.  12 were Asian.  2 Caucasian.  3 got in (1 asian) - I correcting guessed 2 of the 3, the last admit was a harder read - remember, I have no quant stats on them.  None of the 3 went to IUSD schools.  The 11 Asians that didn't get in were all IUSD/Beckman.

What's my purpose of sharing this here?  No real purpose, just sharing to share and to provide one random alumni interview data point.

Sell your Irvine home, move into a shelter in Santa Ana. Poof--compelling essay and interview. Still need to get the grades and SAT scores but this should help differentiate yourself from the crowd.

I liked Wapo's take a little better https://wapo.st/2UbZSCl  jIMHO, nothing shocking in The Atlantic article.  Besides, as the US Attorney said, 'not like they donated a building'

Now really, shouldn't UCI  have a sponsored Equestrian team?  Golf has become so plebeian.

Chinese family allegedly paid $6.5 million in college admissions cheating scam: Source

Another Chinese student’s family paid Singer $1.2 million to get her into Yale University, according to court documents, which identify the student as “Yale Applicant 1.”

The student was identified to ABC News by her attorney as Sherry Guo, 21, who moved to Southern California from China to attend high school in the U.S

He confirmed Ms. Guo moved to California from China to attend high school, and learned English after arriving in California about five years ago. He confirmed she attended JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, CA.

In College Admissions Scandal, Families From China Paid the Most

According to court filings, a Los Angeles-based employee of a financial adviser allegedly told Mr. Singer in November 2017 that the father of Yale Applicant 1 wanted to make a “donation” to “one of those top schools” for his daughter’s “application.”

The next day, Mr. Singer sent Rudolph “Rudy” Meredith, then the Yale women’s soccer coach, the student’s résumé and personal statement, which included links to her art portfolio, according to filings by prosecutors.

Mr. Singer wrote that he would “revise” the art materials to soccer, according to a filing, which said that he falsely listed her as a member of a junior national development team in China and co-captain of a prominent club soccer team in southern California.

Mr. Singer paid $400,000 to Mr. Meredith in exchange for having him designate the girl as a recruited athlete, nearly guaranteeing her a spot at the school, according to court filings. Mr. Meredith pleaded guilty last month for his role in the scheme, which prosecutors say started in 2015 and included taking bribes for multiple students.

Yale said it rescinded the admission of a student last month after investigating allegations that its former women’s head soccer coach was involved in Mr. Singer’s scheme. The school said it did so “as a result of this matter,” referring to the admissions scandal, and didn’t identify the individual.

Ms. Guo was listed in the Yale directory as recently as April 10, but no longer appears there.

Ms. Guo won awards for her artwork, according to news stories posted on the JSerra Catholic High School website. She was also listed as an international student officer for the school’s National Honor Society chapter.

Eric Stroupe, the school’s principal, said she is an “unbelievable artist” and “super talented,” and had very strong grades. He said he didn’t know of Ms. Guo’s alleged connection to the admissions scandal until he was contacted by the Journal, and he was shocked.

Family Paid $6.5 Million to Get Their Daughter Into Stanford
« Reply #72 on: May 01, 2019, 04:28:43 PM »
The student is Yusi Zhao, who was admitted to Stanford in 2017, according to a person with direct knowledge of the investigation. Neither she nor her parents, who live in Beijing, have been charged, and it is unclear whether they are currently being investigated. Stanford rescinded Ms. Zhao’s admission in April, and she is no longer a student there.

The person with knowledge of the inquiry said that Ms. Zhao’s family was introduced to Mr. Singer by a financial adviser at Morgan Stanley based in Pasadena, named Michael Wu. A spokeswoman for Morgan Stanley said that Mr. Wu had been terminated for not cooperating with an internal investigation into the matter and that the firm was cooperating with the authorities. Mr. Wu did not respond to a phone call.

Ms. Zhao appears to have participated in a recent conference hosted by the Princeton-U.S. China Coalition. Her biography on the group’s website said she was planning to major in psychology and East Asian Studies and was interested in education policy in China. It added that she hoped to be involved in the Chinese government in the future.

Ms. Zhao worked during a recent summer in a biology and chemistry research lab at Harvard, under the direction of Daniel G. Nocera, a professor of energy at the university. Dr. Nocera said in an email that Ms. Zhao was unpaid and worked for Stanford credit.

Her father, Tao Zhao, is the co-founder of multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical company Shandong Buchang and was named in the Panama Papers.

Looks like Daddy Warbucks also paid for her makeover.  See before and after pics.

Mr. Zhao is cheating by under-cutting the going rate.

For non-legacy admissions, both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates donated at least $50 million each to Stanford.  To train their daughters in horse riding, Bill Gates bought her daughter $16 million horse and Steve Jobs widow bought $15 million ranch, a short drive away from Bill Gate's $35 million property (18 acres of privacy lots next to 4.5 acre ranch home) in Wellington FL.  Both family's daughters were trained in equestrian sports and admitted to Stanford, which of course has an equestrian sports program.

Stanford staff and students benefited from a least $100 million in donations from both families.  Mr. Zhao, on the other hand, paid a much lower sum that went directly into certain individual's pockets and did not benefit Stanford in grants and shiny new buildings.  Had Mr. Zhao simply donated $50-100 million to gift new dorms to Stanford students, there wouldn't have been a scandal with his daughter's admissions.
