One reason why new home keep getting larger and larger is because the building cost of a larger home is relatively cheap in places like Irvine.  For example, the land cost for a lot in Irvine may cost the builder $500k for a 4,000sf lot but their cost to build a home will be roughly $150/sf so if they build a 3,000sf home will cost them approx. $1m and fetch a sales price of $1.3m-$1.4m but if they build a 4,000sf home then the cost only goes up $150k but the sales price goes up by $450k.
