Closest to Irvine? Take Jamboree North to Santiago Canyon (or 241 Toll Road to Santiago Canyon), head towards Silverado Canyon Road, then turn off safely near Black Star Canyon Road. Hopefully the Peltzer Pines Christmas Tree farm lights are turned off, if not go a bit further down Black Star Canyon Road. It's relatively dark there and thankfully not the huge drive out on Ortega Highway that others take to get away from light pollution.

Follow up - Was out in RSM where it was relatively dark. Saw 5 bright shooting stars in about 30 min of sky watching. Cloud cover rolled in and made it impossible to see anything.
