Weekend trip to San Diego & restaurants

Took a short trip over the weekend to San Diego to attend wedding at Mister A's.  For those who are not familiar Mister A's is a rooftop steakhouse restaurant with great view of the city.  I've dined here previously and their steak was good.  However due to the large number of wedding guests they had to serve short ribs instead of steak, which I thought was OK but not excellent.  The night view from rooftop here is quite nice.  Expect to spend ~$100/head here for dinner, the menu selection is good.

I haven't been back in SD for years since I stopped going to SDCC (comic con).  The number of homeless in downtown area has increased and parking at the hotel is now $38/day.  Little Italy area is still quite nice with fewer homeless folks and good selection of restaurants.  I recommend going around the corner from Little Italy to Bencotto for their stuffed pasta.  I like their fluffy gnocchi:

They also serve cured meat with fluffy fried bread.  I did a little scouting around Little Italy area and found newly built apartment buildings mostly empty, asking $2300-2400/month for 1 bed condo.  The 1 bed condos here sells for ~$500,000, which I think it's over priced and would wait for RE down cycle.  Little Italy is a nice walk-able area with decent selection of stores and restaurants.  If you invest here it may be tough to find tenant unless if you under-cut others.

For breakfast we went to Cafe 21 in downtown (Gaslamp).  They have an unique menu with middle eastern flavor and some  vegetarian/vegan dishes.  The egg Benedict variations were OK, I wanted to try the Japanese pancake but they ran out, so I ordered the (turkey) Borek instead.  Large fluffy meat filled pastry with light and flaky dough.  :D

We also popped in at Barona Casino, which offers dining service at the gaming tables -- they roll up a cart with your food.  :D  No alcohol served in casino but you can order them in restaurants.  If you want to spend less $ on food they have food court with variety of selections, but Sage Cafe has cheap soup and bread basket.  Their fried Indian bread with honey and butter is delicious when served hot.  Most of the slot machines here are progressive type with poor odds to suck your wallet dry, but I was able to find 2 or 3 traditional dollar slots without progressive jackpot hidden in a far corner, and spent $40 to win $200.

Good find and good rec. I will have to try it.

Funny thing about wedding foods. Each and every wedding I went to, I have to find a restaurant close by and eat after the wedding. And average price per plate for wedding food is $150-200. I should get into this business.

Was in Point Loma (SD) watching Soylent Blue participate in a volleyball match. Nice views of San Diego, the harbors, even out to sea when at the top of the hill. That area is oddly underdeveloped, likely because the USN owns most of the real estate on the peninsula. At the base of the hill, down by the harbor there's a terrific dock side brew pub -

We arrived while Happy Hour was still ongoing, but by the time we left it was "line out the door" packed. Don't know what it is with San Diego bars, but the drinks we had were made surprisingly strong. That's a good thing when the food is rich and filling. We plan on returning when down there. Hope others will enjoy it as well.

PS - Since you're in the area, and if you also have $13m to blow, why not take a look at this place:

You know there a saying. Curse like a sailors. And Sailors drink like fish. Drinks are made strong. This is so the waitress won't have to come around too often to get you drink. Big pluses for me. That area PL is terrific. The vet cemetery is in that area too. The view is superb. Will have to hit that spot next time I am there.
