iPhone x facial recognition can't tell Asians apart

I don't know anything about phones or technology (Amish here). But can't iPhone just do an iris scan instead? Or give users that option in addition to facial scan? I've been surprised how well the iris scanner works on the Samsung S8. We've tried to trick it at home with two of us who have similar unique iris features and it can always tell the difference.

Apple trying to be "extra cool" and skipping retina scan all together.
