Windows 8.1 and Windows everywhere

At the Build event yesterday, Microsoft announced the changes to Windows 8.1, an initiative to make Windows licensing free on tablets and devices with screens less than 9", and apps that run universally on their 3 major platforms, Win 8.1, Win 8.1 Phone and XBox One.

They went too touch friendly with the Win8 UI, so 8.1 brings back more keyboard/mouse control, including the Start menu.

The decision to make Win8 free will bring around more vendors creating smaller form Windows products which to me is good because I was hoping to have one OS for all devices.

As for the universal apps, I'm currently running a mix of iOS, Android and Win7 on multiple platforms and given that I use Windows for most of my productivity tasks, it would follow that I am favorable to using it on at least a tablet and maybe a phone. I don't really like the XBO but knowing that there is a way to run my apps there is a bonus.
