    Impressions of our new school

I did not realize how distorted is the reputation of Irvine public school education to outsiders.  Irvine schools are competitive, but I don't think we ever claimed the rat race champion spot. If you need a bloodbath environment for your kids, go to NYC, this is probably not the right city for...

    Karis versus Irvine Chinese School

Interesting perspective. Our experience has been diametrically opposite, though (we found SCCCA curriculum too easy). But it depends on the program/instruction.  IMHO, if your kid only takes Chinese Sat/Sun - that's just not serious and (eventually) is a waste of time. But that's just my...

Who went straight to 1st grade?

Parents, we are not attending Kindergarten this year (keeping my 5 year old kid one more year in a private school), but want to go directly to the 1st grade in the fall.  Anyone has done this in Irvine?  There is so much hysteria about overcrowding and getting a spot.  We are assigned to...

    Karis versus Irvine Chinese School

Cannot speak for Karis, but we prefer A Little Dynasty (campus on Alton/Gillette in Irvine).  They have after school programs for kids 4-5 years old.  Used both-ALD and SCCCA, found SCCCA campus more impressive but personal attention/instruction at ALD is better. ALD also separates kids by...

A Little Dynasty vs Le Port Mandarin Immersion

Definitely ALD over LePort Mandarin.  No question.  Class sizes in Mandarin LePort campus are swelling, some well over 24 kids in class, very little attention will be given to your kid (despite the astronomical tuition).  Plus remember, LePort Mandarin abides by strictly Montessori methods-kids...

    IUSD schools vs other districts

Would it be possible for your kid can be a "just a kid" in IUSD and be happy?  He/she can study less, get average grades, go to a lesser-name college but then be more successful (and happy!) in life than any of the over-Kumon-ized and stressed out Irvine overachievers.  Or is your goal for your...

Anyone knows about a good summer chess camp for kids?

    Is Harvard Unfair to Asian-Americans?

Yes, it is true. Harvard is unfair to Asian Americans in college admissions. There are many brilliant Asian Americans who get turned down.  Many reasons for that.  For one, the Ivies are very much tired of the exact Asian American "formula" they see over and over on college applications...

    Top colleges

Living in Irvine is neither an advantage, nor it is a liability when it comes to the college admissions, generally speaking (however, there might a bit of reverse discrimination against Asian American students in college admissions: being Asian in Irvine is somewhat a liability, as you need to...

    Public or Montessori Kindergarten

Definitely Montessori.  Irvine public school kindergarten is a bad choice.  30-33 kids per class, very low academic standards (advanced kids will be bored, average - won't advance too far, kids that are falling behind won't get individual attention).  Yes, as an Irvine home owner I feel a bit...

    Language Immersion Programs in IUSD!

IrvineDream, I don't know much about Australia.  UK education, however, I know.  I took 4 A-Levels (exit exams) after graduating from UK high school there and almost died - they were so incredibly hard.  Have any US kid to take a British A-Level in Maths (yes, they say "Maths") - most will...

    Language Immersion Programs in IUSD!

Oh, don't get me started...Everyone knows the American school curriculum is a total joke, comparing to what it is in Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Europe.  Our kids are 2-3 years behind their peers in math and science (with the "full" curriculum), having trouble learning a second language and...

    College funds

every UC is about the same % except for Berkeley, UCLA and UCSD.  Although the reason these schools accept more of out of state students - they know the yield is going to be pretty low.  International students' acceptance rate at Berkeley us at 10% - so they are not really a factor.

    College funds

it is their unofficial unpublished overall goal: Admit rate ? Overall 35.4% Admits 23,573 Applicants 66,508 California Residents (% of admits) 73.8% http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/irvine/freshman-profile/ So let's stop the stupid hysteria over foreign students taking Cal...

90% enrolled vs. 90% admit is a bit different - but yes, overwhelming majority of UC students are Cal residents.  :)

UC has a mandate to admit 75% of California residents.  So, no worries. There will be no foreign student invasion any time soon.

    Language Immersion Programs in IUSD!

I am sorry, but I want my kids to be excellent in math, science AND Spanish.  Is that a goal too high for your kids?

    Language Immersion Programs in IUSD!

Spanish will not in any way "distract" any kid from learning math or science.  Especially, if math and science is taught in Spanish (the whole point of the immersion program anyway).
