Irvine Valley College - The Blue Ocean Strategy to UCLA / UC Berkeley

Sad, but true. The brand is definitely a signal to employers. The brand universities would be risking their reputations by offering their credentials to 10x more students. I'm pleasantly surprised that the CS Masters program at Georgia Tech is still ranked well.

Irvine Valley College - The Blue Ocean Strategy to UCLA / UC Berkeley

I'm saying.. find ways to increase or get rid of the cap. Yeah, not everyone is going to be able to do certain programs but there are way more that are capable of it than are admitted.

You were 100% right about how Georgia Tech trended! After years of thinking about Columbia/Stanford/USC's Distance Learning/Online Masters in CS and not doing it because of the cost (~$65k is what I recall), I was elated to hear about Georgia Tech offering OMSCS (~$7k). I finished the program in...

Irvine Valley College - The Blue Ocean Strategy to UCLA / UC Berkeley

I believe Georgia Tech admits all those that they think will be able to complete the program. This has increased the number of CS Master's degrees awarded tremendously (they graduated 10,000 alumni in their first 10 years). Instead of capping majors, I wish the UCs would find solutions to...

Georgia Tech did it by having many TAs and they’ve done it for 10 years now (with a relatively low cost) with an incredible increase in the number of CS Masters degrees awarded while also keeping their reputation/ranking strong.

Pre-internet, you just could not get a higher education without physically being at one of these institutions. Now, it has been possible for many years yet the institutions don’t want to give up their brand. If everyone could get a degree from Harvard, how special would it be? Not all majors...

Irvine Valley College - The Blue Ocean Strategy to UCLA / UC Berkeley

The video is great and he is creative and talented! But I don’t think Harvard necessarily made a big mistake - they just had others they prioritized higher. Collectively, we need to stop caring so much about the brand but we do (as evidenced by the video and our discussion here). And as long as...

Irvine Valley College - The Blue Ocean Strategy to UCLA / UC Berkeley

How should they decide who to admit without any sort of standardized testing? I actually wish these schools did not have a limit on how many can attend. But then the focus would be on learning as opposed to status/signaling… ugh

    Student Driver stickers

For several years now, I've noticed a large number of Student Driver stickers on cars with drivers that don't seem like students. What's going on with this practice? Growing up, I remember seeing those stickers only on cars that were used by driving schools for teaching kids.

Irvine Valley College - The Blue Ocean Strategy to UCLA / UC Berkeley

It's a nice sentiment to just let the kids be but I think reality is a little different. They need to be exposed to all kinds of things so they can get a feel for what they like and don't. They need to be inspired. They need to socialize. They need to be physically active. They need to fail...

Do you like your child’s Irvine high school and why?

What part of Irvine are you in? Are you able to choose which high school or do you get assigned one based on where you live? I've heard that University High and Northwood High are academically very competitive.

    Toyota moving to Texas

Yeah, I'm in favor of one minimum wage. I'd also like to see that applied to waitstaff at restaurants. We need to simplify all of these crazy laws that add never ending complexity. But I guess bureaucracy in our institutions only serves to increase that bureaucracy. Bureaucracy's gonna bureaucracy?
