California Voters Remove Judge in Stanford Rape Case

Ah, the ever so reliable and prestigious  New York Times. Fake News and hard left-wing bias.

"He is the first judge recalled in California in more than 80 years."

Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, Rose Bird, was recalled on November 4, 1986, along with  two or three of her co-hacks.  Sometimes Californians get things right.  Not often, but sometimes.

I don't want to split hairs, but Rose Bird was not recalled. Unlike CA Superior Court judges, CA Supreme Court justices are appointed by the govenor, they are not elected so they cannot be recalled. At the end of the justice's term, if he/she wants another term, the justice must be "retaiined" by the voters in an election. This is how Rose Bird got fired from the Supreme Court, the voters voted down her retention.

Yes, it is a technical distinction without a practical difference. Like getting evicted or the landlord not renewing your lease. Either way, you're out on the street.

Rose Bird was my earliest experience with how politics works. The organization that bankrolled the effort to get rid of Bird was something like "Califonians for the Death Penalty." However, that organization was made up of most of the major businesses in California. They wanted to get rid of Bird for her anti-business outlook but they knew they couldn't call their organization "Californians for Bigger Corporate Profits" so they tapped into popular outrage about the fact Bird reversed every single death penalty conviction that came across her desk despite the fact these businesses didn't give a flying fuck about the death penalty. Voters who didn't like the Bird's death penalty stance voted her out, most of them not knowing that the companies that paid for all the anti-Bird ads couldn't care less about the death penalty. Kinda reminds us of 5P using veterans as a cover for their actual motives.
