Tustin Legacy Academy 6-12

Legacy 6-12 Academy, a major component of the Tustin Legacy planned community, is slated to break ground in 2018 after years of worry that the promised project would never materialize.

Expected to open in 2020, the combined middle and high school will provide an upper-grade transition from Heritage Elementary, which opened in 2016 after a bumpy five years.

The new school will be built at the southwest corner of Tustin Ranch Road and Valencia Avenue on the former Marine Corps Air Station. The city transferred the 40 acres of land to Tustin Unified School District in 2015.

Legacy Academy will serve up to 1,200 students with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.

Although the Heritage facility was completed in 2011, low enrollment numbers due to a stall in home construction shelved the school?s inauguration. That led to disgruntled residents saddled with paying off a bond for a school they couldn?t use.

The city sued Tustin Unified over the delay, but a judge ruled the district had the right to postpone the opening.

During that contentious chapter, Tustin Legacy residents wondered if they would ever have a nearby elementary, much less middle and high school classrooms.

But such fears were put to rest two years ago when the city and Tustin Unified approved a $78 million plan to build the academy. Roughly half of the money will come from city contributions and developer fees, and the rest from bonds financed through a Mello-Roos district created in Tustin Legacy.

At long last, 2018 will mark the end of uncertainty and the beginning of a new era for Tustin schools.

When we bought in Columbus square in 2012 we bought because of the central location. The next couple of years should be interesting.  They finally broke ground on the veteran sports park and that will open in the summer of 2019. The office building, Tustin flight I think is what it?s called, on the corner of barranca and red hill is coming along nicely, the elementary school opened in 2016 and the shopping center opened this fall. They are close to finishing a building on Valencia and red hill, think it?s education related.

All of these things should help kickstart the residential construction south of edinger and west of jamboree, east of Tustin Ranch Road. And the cherry on top is the 40% appreciation. Our alternate choice in 2012 was the Las ventanas plan 3 in portola springs.

CS is really nice and I'm happy for you. We liked it for all the reasons you mention, in addition to a planned dense central district. The MR was the only thing that gave us pause so I'm glad you're finally getting value for that.

Btw did you see 15210 Davenport before it closed? Place reeked of dog urine.

Thanks Hmart. I never go see open houses in the neighborhood, so I didn?t see the one on Davenport.

All I need now is a Tommy?s to open up nearby :)

The last I heard (few months ago) TUSD only had enough money for the first phase of the middle/high school and they were not sure what grades would go there. They were adamant about not finishing the buildout until they secure all the funding needed which has to come from newer homes than the ones that have sold out in Greenwood.

Have they decided what grades they will accommodate and when the entire school will be open? This is after all TUSD, not IUSD.

If you go the State Architect website they've listed the construction price at $61,000,000 and have been paying all fees associated with inspections and such with this price.  This price seems to be right in the middle of the partial build-out and full build-out according to their projected costs from Nov 2016.  They have to provide a statement of final construction costs under 'documents required' in the right column of the attached link... You might be able to catch what they're doing prior to any public announcement if you check in here.

From looking at those plans in the link they plan on building an admin building, 2 classroom building and a gym.

If you look at the school renderings, it seems to be the full build out.

The school rendering has an admin building, one building for 6-8, one building for 9-12
