Irvine to consider committing $40 million toward veterans cemetery at Great Park

WTF! $40M of our city tax dollars going to a cemetery that most Irvine residents won't be able to use and that many oppose. This is worse than former Mayor Choi's $200M library. At least I could potentially enjoy a library.

This is utter craziness. It's completely irresponsible to spend our tax money to further Jeff's own political agenda. Nobody wants the cemetery in the current location, including the veterans.

Are they gonna have gun salutes at the funerals?

Of course.

Over time you will get use to it.  ;)

I don't live near there but it's just a reminder that you're close to the cemetery and that was a reason a lot of people didn't want to buy in BP. I thought the cemetery was dead........ pun intended.

Gov Moonbeam pulled $1.4B of redevelopment funds, then Irvine sued and got a $250M (or so) settlement. This is Great Park money, from the great State of California. And since FP is paying to build the Great Park, Irvine has plenty of money to construct the Veterans Cemetery.

You may expect several per day, often with motorcycle escorts. This will be a busy cemetery.

Oh man just got the inside scoop. There will be no cemetery. Lol

Why does Irvine have to shoulder the cost for a VA cemetery? Shouldn't that settlement money be invested wisely for park maintenance and capital projects? The cemetery funds should come from the federal government and private donations.

OCLuvr and all them other white, republican, proud armed marine boys may want that veteran cemetery and that is great and all. I salute our men and women who died bravely in the name of freedom.

But trust me when I say, the Chinese Immigrant/FCB/cash buyers will -NOT- ever, EVER, buy a home near a cemetery. There are no IFs, there are no ANDs, there are no BUTS.

Funny thing you brought that picture up.  An old TI alumni in that pic?

the landswap will probably happen now given 5P has more ppl in their favor on the council (once that gets around to being proposed again)

not sure how plopping 40 mil into the project is a good idea but it may be just a move to get things going / get the "discussion" started again.

seems pretty straight forward though, they'll just spin something along the lines of "hey this thing is moving along too slow, nevermind the 40 mil. let's just look at land swap again so it can actually get build/get started"

the veterans cemetery association was cool with it too, they just want to get something built.
