Irvine brings back commission to fight traffic congestion

If they could start by double decking Jeffrey/Culver/Sand Canyon/Jamboree/Irvine Blvd, that would be a step in the right direction.

OMG! You build tons of apts and condos without any kind of public transportation system and are surprised with the increased traffic?
Bring back the recession!
#Maga (aka when you could drive to the store to do your lunch time errands)

We all know the only way to make this happen....

Make the toll roads around Irvine free...especially the 133 at Irvine blvd
Those at Pavillion park/great park/stonegate/Portola springs would all use that instead to get to the 405/5

All of Jeffrey/sand canyon traffic would all go down

It's like painfully obvious it's the solution...come on Irvine get with it

I respectfully disagree -- because the toll road will end up getting congested and now you have NO other options if you are in a hurry.  At least now, if I am in a hurry, I pay up and use the toll road .. if not, I coast along Sand Canyon -- at least I have a choice.

If the roads exist, then let us use them. Perhaps Irvine transportation dollars could subsidize tolls for residents and employers would do the same. The toll road needs to be utilized to its potential until a better solution is found.

It looks like the City has explored the idea of subsidizing the tolls.  Also, the Trabuco/133 interchange has been revived which I thought had been axed to do budget cuts.  That interchange will be sorely needed if Trabuco is indeed the main entrance into GP.

Why should all tax payers pay for  those toll roads? Tolls should be paid voluntarily by those who use them. You don't use them, you don't pay. What is this? Socialism? :p

Toll road are not generating enough money, it's way below projected utilization/traffic volume and the bond for building the toll road is downgraded to junk status.

I think they will welcome the idea that City of Irvine pay for that portion of 133.

I understand your opinion.  Don't use? Don't pay.  And @GH opinion that "If I'm going to pay, I want a clear road" But congestion is going to be a huge problem with all the 4500+ homes being built and all the new development/sports park/golfing range etc that TI has posted.  It already is.  It'll even be worse when Portola high officially opens and you have a thousand of students driving in the morning.  If anyone of you take jeffrey or sand canyon in the morning, you know what I'm talking about.

But less congested roads in my opinion are important for every resident in Irvine.  Anyone whose ever went to LA especially 626/k town/downtown all know what congestion feels like.  Want Irvine to be that way?  I would never buy/work in 626 area for those roads alone.  I'm no real estate pro but I would assume home prices would be affected if congestion grows so I would be okaying with the city paying for the 133.  Roads are just as important as clean water to a city.  We're not talking about some socialism "healthcare" or wanting to enjoy great park amenities without living there  and paying...we're talking about the roads here.

But I'm open to suggestions.  Can you guys think of any other way to solve the issue?

Better light timing would make a huge difference to me. If you come down Irvine Blvd wanting to turn left on Sand Canyon you almost always wait so long at the Woodbury Town Center that you miss the left turn arrow. Takes 5min to go a few hundred feet.

Agreed with you, not sure light timing is the issue but yes that light is terrible.  The other bad one is going down Irvine blvd taking a left on jeffrey.  also the pile of cars when on jeffrey passing the 5 freeway.  Light timing maybe can save 30 seconds of commute, but i think the bigger issue is still the amount of cars on the road waiting at those turns

Maybe we can have bridges to cross the street like Asia so we don't have to wait 30 secs per pedestrian...that might help but not cost efficient

Although expensive, I do agree with the pedestrian bridges over the city's major roads. This way kids are safe going to school and cyclists are taken away from the intersections too.

Perhaps longer right hand turn lanes so drivers don't have to squeeze by.

A person can ask Irvine city planning regarding your questions and thoughts. I'm sure they might have a great response.  ;)

Lots of these fwy on ramp issues would require eminent domain. Lots of left hand turns to get on and off 5 at sand canyon and jeffrey.

Unfortunately people may not like the answers to our traffic mess:
1) Start a building moratorium until Irvine comes up with a new comprehensive traffic plan.
2) Make developers pay even more for traffic mitigation.
3) Stop spending money on expanding roads and start investing in public transportation/shared rides/using free city bikes/walking etc...
4) Consider levying a "congestion fee" during peak traffic hours Monday through Friday. Enforcement will be similar to the tollway with traffic video cameras throughout the city.
