Irvine mayor to deliver State of the City address Tuesday

Feb. 3, 2016 Updated 8:11 a.m.

IRVINE ? Hear the mayor?s views on the city?s recent accomplishments and future plans on Tuesday at the annual State of the City event at Irvine City Hall.

A public reception is set for 5 p.m., followed by the State of the City address by Mayor Steven Choi at 6 p.m.

Irvine?s annual address is analogous to the State of the Union speech given yearly by the U.S. president.

It?s possible the speech may be Choi?s last as mayor.

The two-year term Choi is serving ? his second consecutive mayoral term ? expires in November, and the Irvine politician, a Republican, is seeking the 68th Assembly District seat. Assemblyman Donald Wagner, R-Irvine, who currently holds the seat, will be termed out this year.

Two other Republicans, former Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu and former Villa Park Councilwoman Deborah Pauly, are also vying for the seat. Republicans have a 15-point advantage in voter registration in Assembly District 68, which stretches from Anaheim Hills to Lake Forest.

Irvine voters passed a term limit measure in 2014 that limits politicians to two two-year terms as mayor and two four-year terms as a council member.

However, because Choi?s first term as mayor was before the measure passed, he could run for a third term as mayor if his bid for the Assembly seat doesn?t pan out.

For more information about the State of the City event, call 949-724-6248. No RSVP is required to attend.

The City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday ahead of the State of the City event.

Irvine City Hall is at 1 Civic Center Plaza, Irvine.
