College majors for my kids

if my daughter doesnt get into harvard for free on her mexican ethnicity then i told my wife that depending on the major she wants, i will pay for all of her college costs or a JC and two years of any school. i said there is no way in hell im paying private school prices for four years for a fucking english/psych bullshit degree. no offense to any english/phsyc majors :)

this conversation was last week. still sleeping downstairs :)

Maybe I should have asked should kids major in engineering or engineering, assuming they can't get into med school or law school?  :p  I already knew what I'm pushing my kids into before seeing this article...Computer Science.

I get the possible payback going to an Ivy school or some of the top private schools for useful degrees.  But, there's many of those little no-name private schools that cost just as much.  I don't get that at all.

Do you have girls?  Tell them to pick something that allows flexibility to work remotely and/or part time.

Like?

My wife is looking for that. :)

Ha!  Exactly.  If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't pick what I picked :)
But you know, when you're 18-22, you're not thinking kids in stucco boxes.

Dental Hygienist. They are overpaid Prima Donnas. Rake in the dough, can work part time & on their own terms. Don't need too much schooling either. Just have to deal with those pesky state board exams.

Maybe you should reconsider Harvard....

Harvard University Offers Anal Sex 101
Harvard's "Sex Week" is an annual ?week of programming that is interdisciplinary, thought-provoking, scholastic, innovative and applicable to student experiences in order to promote a holistic understanding of sex and sexuality." This is the third year in a row that Harvard is hosting the event.

Yep, they got paid just as much as Dentist and only requires 4 year of college.  Starting salary is around $350 a day.

Yep and they can also do a 2-year program / associate's instead of 4 years and still be qualified to take the boards.

how much does a dentist make? 350/day is 91K per year. I figured dentists made very high 100's or low 200's.

dentist is a very broad term here. there are general and family dentists, and specialists in different areas.... just like not every surgeon is equal. plastic surgery surgeons make the big bucks

I wasn't sure if this question was for me?  But if so, yes.  You can program from anywhere so it'll be nice and a skill I'm sure will still be valuable 20, 30 years from now.

My nephew just graduated with a CS degree and he gets to work from home one day a week.  Imagine that for a starting job.

I'm hoping one of my kids will become a great programmer and start up a company called Gaggle or Giggle or Guggle or whatever so that I can retire comfortably.  :p

Anyone have true figures from starting pay for DDS and General Physicians and some "mid career" figures?

I know no doctors so I can't really ask anyone.  Also, the salary websites don't seem so authentic.

Kaiser should pay pretty well. The Pharm. D people are making over $150k from early on.

I like how this article has pay increase from base pay to mid career level.  There are careers that start at a competitive rate, but literally have very little growth throughout the person's tenure in the grand scheme of things.

Get your EEs.  Go into sales for a technology company.  Less schooling and great pay up front.

New grad, fresh out of dental school general dentist working for a dental corporation or as an associate are probably starting around $400-$450 a day in LA area, just a little over $100k/year.  Salary varies by region but LA area probably is the lowest in the nation.

Seasoned general dentist own their own practice average around $200k/year.

Orthodontist has the highest salary among dentists.  Average around $350k/year.

Other specialist fall somewhat in between these figure but Oral Surgeon that does a lot of dental implants can easily top over $350k/year.
